Softbox issue dated 1962 with great Bill Campbell box artwork. Very nicely molded kit for that time with excellent fit, fine recessed panel lines and raised rib lines. Inventoried and NOTE: the airplane is missing the prop retainer (easily made, does not show when assembled). The aircraft includes all other parts, decals and instructions but NOTE: missing display stand. The Laird Solution won the first official Thompson Trophy Race in 1930 at the Curtiss-Wright Reynolds Airport in Chicago. The Laird was the only Biplane to win the Thompson and it beat all the military aircraft. Charles 'Speed' Holman was the pilot and was the first civilian to attain a speed over 200 mph in a closed course event nationally. E. M. Laird Airplane Company built the aircraft for BF Goodrich. Construction began only 3 weeks before the race. There was only one 10 minute trial flight before the aircraft won the race.

Rare. The 'Whip Fly' release is based on the 1950s Yak-25 Flashlight "S" kit and comes with a Model Master Stamp for this kit, USSR decals, flight ballast, handle, 12 feet of control line, control ring, streamers for the jet engines and a underside pod which is an in-flight whistle! Never started. The ballast, control line and metal ring and 'streamers' (see below) are still factory sealed. All other parts have been inventoried complete including 'near mint' condition trading stamp, decals and instructions. NOTE: the instructions tell you to cut the streamers from the plastic bag that contains the ballast, control line and ring. Normally, this bag is printed with an orange strip to add color to the streamers. This bag is present, sealed and intact but missed the 'color stripe' machine! The complete Whip-Fly series includes H151 F9F-8 Cougar, H152 F-84F, H153 F-89D Scorpion, H154 F8U-1 Crusader, H155 F-39 Airacobra, H156 F-101A Voodoo, Canberra, F-106 and Yak-25 Flashlight. The Whip-Fly series seemed like a good idea...at first. Revell quickly realized that spinning heavily-ballasted, sharp objects at dizzying speeds in or outside the home near groups of children was not the best idea. The series was quickly discontinued.

This early issue has the correct 'rectangle-base' clear stand. The instructions are correct and reflect as well, as does the decal sheet which is correct in not having a stand decal. Very rare large-scale kit with fascinating operating features. This early 1960s issue has very high gloss box top artwork in 'excellent' condition. Flaws include very light corner creases as shown, some light general wear and a small piece of clear tape on the top long side. The model uses a complex series of 6 cogs and gears with wire springs and twine to make functioning landing gear and speed brakes. When you lower the arresting (tail) hook, the landing gear doors open and the nose and main wheels extend. When you raise the arresting hook, the landing gear retracts and the doors close. Furthermore, when you pull out the parachute release at the tail, the speed brakes lower; when you close it, the speed brakes close. The kit is molded in the correct silver for the airframe, white cogs, gears & pilot, clear two piece opening canopy, real rubber tires and metal springs. There is a large gloss black Heller stand as well. Never started. All of the small parts (white plastic, springs and internal linkage for the operating systems) are still in the factory sealed bag. All other parts are inventoried complete and includes decals and instructions present. Even the original Heller Quality Control paper is present. The instructions are 'excellent.' The decals are flat and intact with the wax covering sheet and 'very good.' The only flaw is the usual age yellowing. Postal insurance is required for this kit.

Strombecker was very well known for producing the finest pre-carved hardwood aircraft and missile kits, but they had a very short journey into the plastic model field. They made a total of 5 molds for plastic injected aircraft kits, the 1956 Sea Dart being the first. All were discontinued in the mid 1960s. One kit is this excellent X-1B. It is the rarer of the two releases as it contains the pilots bust molded into the fuselage (the other one does not). Includes full instructions with three photos of the real aircraft, full color decals, Strombecker kit catalog and an application for the Strombecker Model-Makers Club. Kit features full landing gear, clear canopy and display stand. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.
