Aurora Aero Commander 680, 1/81, 285

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Poor

Sold

Aurora of Holland issue. Still the only plastic kit of this venerable corporate workhorse. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. NOTE: although all parts are present, one blade is broken off at a hub and that blade is missing. All other parts are fine. The box is very rough and has a long tear and missing litho on one long side. The Aero Commander was a state-of-the-art twin engine light transport from the early 1960s. It was built by Aero Design and Engineering Co. of Bethany, Oklahoma. It was the first twin engine aircraft to be used by the President of the United States and served in this capacity in the early 1960s. This high performance 5 to 7 place was popular with business travelers and had a range of 1,050 miles and a ceiling of 22,000 feet. The Aero Commander led to the Jet Commander, which became the IAI 1121 through 1124 Westwind business jets. Aero Commanders can still be seen at some airports in excellent condition, but many are neglected as newer aircraft are in favor.

In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

And thanks to Stephen Payne for submitting this additional information- The team of Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin raced at tracks throughout North Carolina and became a national sensation in the 1960s and early '70s dominating the action in their chosen area of competition, including the Super Stock, Factory Experimental, Funny Car, and Pro Stock categories. The team duo pioneered the development of drag racing teams as professional business operations. Sox was the winningest Pro Stock driver (nine victories in 23 events) in the 1970-72 "four-speed era." Initially Martin and Sox were competitors, but Martin approached Sox to drive his car after concluding that he just couldn't beat him. The Sox & Martin team ceased operation at the end of the 1975 season as a result of the energy crisis and dwindling factory support.

The box states that it can be converted to a 'road racing' or slot car. Never started. Inventoried complete with all parts, decals and instructions.
