UPC Mitsubishi A6M5 Zeke Zero (ex-Marusan), 1/50, 5058-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$24

Purchased new on May 19, 1967 at Woolworths in Cleveland, Ohio. From ex-Marusan molds. Features moving ailerons, elevators, rudder and flaps as well as retractable landing gear. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but bought kits already molded from other manufactures and re-boxed the kits in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did UPC box art in the 1960s. All UPC production ended in the 1970s.

Air Lines Martin Marauder II (B-26C) RAF - (Frog), 1/72, 12902

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$25

Purchased new in 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio. Quality Frog kit - no rivets, just fine panel lines for a realistic model. Features separately molded rudder, elevator and ailerons, pilot and gunner figure and detailed engines with rotating propellers. Inventoried with all parts, decals and instructions. Please NOTE that one prop blade is broken at the hub base but is present. This box has some of my favorite Jo Kotula boxart. Kotula originally did 1930s covers for the magazine 'Model Airplane News' and later the Aurora box art of the late 1950s. Air Lines kits are all Frog molds that the Lines Brothers imported to the USA between 1964-1966. The kits, decals and instructions were made in England, then imported to the USA where Testors created the boxes with the colorful trading cards on the back. There are one or two trading cards on each box which show the boxart but not the advertising/logo. Some kits contain a Testors color painting guide also, but it is not specific to any model.

$18

From the late 1940s/early 1950s. This is a solid balsa wood glider with a 13 inch wingspan. When properly built and trimmed, they are incredible performers. Sterling Spitfire Mk.I Drops Bombs in Flight - 24 inch Wingspan for RC / Control Line / Freeflight, A19

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc

$65

Still factory sealed. Larger scale for RC, free flight or control line. Includes innovative system for automatically dropping bombs in flight. An excellent model featuring color decals, high-grade die cut balsa, vacuform plastic detail parts, rubber wheels, finished wire landing gear, rubber motor and plastic prop, full size plans/instructions and details on conversion to RC or control line. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they had the action features and included everything needed to complete the model.

Guillows Spitfire - 16 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, 504

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

$22

From the 1960s. One of a very popular 16.5 inch wingspan series of World War 2 stick and tissue flying kits. Includes die cut balsa parts, vacuform nose, wheels, plastic propeller, hardware, vacuform canopy, colored tissue, insignia and full size plans with detailed building instructions. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.
