Revell 1904 Nash Rambler Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H47-89

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

1953 issue, the first year for the 'Series Three' Highway Pioneers. These issues feature the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. This kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internally sealed factory bag. Includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

Strombecker Douglas DC-6 Flagship - American Airlines- 13.5 inch Wingspan Solid Wood Model, C-36

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

NOTE: builder kit only, please read carefully for the condition. 1950s classic 13.5 inch wingspan model made of solid Western Pine - not balsa. Builds up to an impressive display model. Features fuselage, wings, elevators, rudder and nacelles all cut to final shape, steel nose weight, formed metal propellers, struts and rubber wheels. NOTE: this kit has very minor assembly. The nose weight and wooden block off have been neatly installed in the fuselage. There is no other assembly. Includes the excellent Strombecker instructions. Inventoried NOTE: missing decals, sandpaper, glue and filler envelopes, one main gear strut(easily made from wire), (1) main wheel, all four retainers for the props (these are common small nails or brads). I have included a full-size black and white photocopy of the original decals; using the two articles on this website, you can scan, color and print these on decal paper for this model. Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - usually only a quick sanding would finish them.

Modern reissue from the original 1950s classic kit and still a 'Classic Builder' favorite. Full hull kit which was very well detailed for that time features full hull, prop and rudder detail, extensive deck fittings, detailed guns and gun tubs, complete superstructure, landing craft with opening front doors, display stand and more. There is a superb, modern decal sheet for all versions listed. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. This kit has a fascinating history directly linked to the origins of USA plastic ship modeling. Originally produced by Varney in 1944, it was novel at the time as it was highly detailed, had a wooden hull, cardstock but all injection molded tenite deck parts and details. When the early Varney aircraft and ship kits did not sell well, Gorden Varney sold the molds for the kit to O-lin (Olsen and Lindberg). O-Lin reworked the kit using a vacuform hull, cardstock deck, metal railings and tenite parts. When Lindberg took full control of O-lin, he modified the molds for a third time so the kit has metal railings and all other parts are injection molded. Because it was always a great seller, Paul Lindberg reissued this model many times under numerous different box art. Some versions were motorized; others were not. Now Round 2 has acquired the Lindberg molds and issued it again; few kits have had this long of a successful life.

Competition Models Inc Sal Taibi's Starduster - 42 Inch Wingspan Gas Powered Free Flight Model

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Sold brand new on 7-7-1961 at the legendary Cleveland Hobby Supply Company at 4526 Lorain Ave, Cleveland, OH. Includes the original hand-written receipt. Large wingspan kit for .02 to .074 engines. This is one of the famous Sal Taibi's National award winning designs. Sal was one of the early 'Kings Of Gas Free Flight' and a very gifted designer. The model is from the 1950s. This model came from the estate of a very active and particular early aircraft kit collector. It is like factory-new inside and has not been started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed clear bag; the other parts have been inventoried complete with the plans. Designed for 'Sniffing Thermals,' the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and powered models (most all driven by Brown engines) took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) models could not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all in a stable fashion and without any operator inputs once the airplane took off.
