Amodel Tu-128 Fiddler, 1/72, 72100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

At long last, an injection molded model of this long-range Soviet interceptor. Nicely detailed with over 100 pieces, all recessed surface detail, very good cockpits, separately molded ailerons, trailing edge flaps, elevators & rudder, detailed landing gear, four K-80 missiles and more. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. The giant Fiddler is still the world's largest fighter aircraft and was designed to range far and wide to hunt down B-52 bombers. The Soviet Union had such a large northern border that it could not be covered with the existing range surface-to-air missiles and the short-ranged fighters available. Instead of leaving large gaps unprotected, PVO opted for defending the entire front but loosely; the Fidder was the result of this policy. The original design for this task was the La-250, which was unsuccessful and Lavochkin's last aircraft. The lessons learned helped develop the Tu-128. The large fuel load was carried internally while all the missiles were carried on wing pylons. The AA-5 "Ash" was one of the most powerful air-to-air missiles at that time. The aircraft was first shown publicly in 1961. 198 were built and production ended in 1970. Fiddler was not a dogfighter or highly sophisticated but was reliable. The only 'combat' experienced by this type was in shooting down NATO reconnaissance balloons. Fiddler had a very long service life, being replace in 1990 by the much more capable Mig-31.

Resin Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very highly detailed resin kit that is very finely molded. Includes full decals and paint guide. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. The Ryan XV-5 Vertifan was a jet-powered V/STOL experimental aircraft in the 1960s. The U.S. Army commissioned the Ryan VZ-11RY (which was re-designated as the XV-5 in 1962) in 1961, along with the Lockheed VZ-10 Hummingbird (re-designated as the XV-4). The XV-5 drove three fans. Engine gases from two 3,000 lb thrust J85 turbojets, similar to those used in the F-5 Freedom Fighter were sent to exit by turning fans. It was much simpler in concept, if not execution, compared to the future F-35 Lightning II which has one fan driven by a drive shaft, balanced by a rotating rear nozzle. There was a large fan in each wing with covers resembling half garbage can lids that flipped up for vertical flight. The 36 inch nose fan provided adequate pitch control but made flying tricky. The fans provided vertical thrust of approximately 16,000 lb, nearly three times the horizontal thrust of the engines alone.

Aircraft History and SpecificationDuring the Vietnam War and Arab-Israeli War, the U.S.A.F. C-141 and C-5 were forced to carry a fraction of their maximum payload on direct flights from the continental United States to Asia and Israel. The strategic airlift operations demonstrated the necessity of adequate air-refueling capability. The U.S. Department of Defense concluded that a more advanced tanker was needed. The "Advance Tanker Cargo Aircraft" program was launched in 1975, four aircraft were evaluated: the Boeing 747, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, the Lockheed L-1011 and C-5 Galaxy. The U.S Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas's DC-10 in 1977. The design for the KC-10 involved only modifications from the DC-10-30CF design. The major changes were the addition of a boom control station in the rear of the fuselage and extra fuel tanks below the main deck. The KC-10 first flew in July 1980. The first aerial refueling occurred during testing in October 1980, with the receiver aircraft a C-5 Galaxy. The first KC-10 was delivered to the U.S.A.F. in 1981. The 60th and last was formally handed over in 1988.
