Comet Boeing 707 Stratotanker - (367-80 - Dash 80), 1/125, PL800-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Rare model from the mid 1950s and part of American plastic model kit history. Comet originally began model production in 1929 with a line of balsa flying models. In the mid-1950s Comet made a beautiful line of small and medium scale aircraft and missile models with colorful boxes. The early issues were in one-piece 'flip-top' boxes, and the later issues and releases were in standard two-piece 'hardboxes' with a lithograph slick glued to the top box. In 1963 Comet sold the plastic kit molds to Aurora. Aurora reissued some but not all of the kits. There were two Boeing 707 models made. This is the two-piece box larger scale (1/125) 'Stratotanker' - not really a tanker model at all, but a very nice model of the famous Dash-80 Prototype Tanker/707, which lead to the world's first commercially-successful airliner. Well molded with fine recessed panel lines, landing gear and prototype decals. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Monogram Speedee Bilt B-17 Bomber - Memphis Belle, 1/62, H3-495

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Very rare, classic early multi-media kit from 1954 with a fantastic internal part presentation. Features the amazing Monofoil Wing, dozens of cleanly die-cut balsa wood piece on factory-painted sheets, completely precarved fuselage blocks and other pieces, injection molded clear parts for all windows and canopies, nose and tail sections, wing tips, crew members, turrets, propellers, cowlings, wheels, nacelles and more, Monoglue cement unopened in the original box, four glass bottles of Monodope which are all still good and more. Includes a beautiful full-size fold out plan, a highly detailed and heavily illustrated instructions booklet, extensive full color decals and even a small catalog showing the full Speedee-Bilt line, Superkit line, Jet Racers and even Monogram's first two plastic kits (P-1 Midget Racer and P-2 Hot Rod). This kit has never been started. Inside, all of the internal cardboard presentation material is in amazing 'near mint' condition. All of the parts in the three upper trays are still factory tape sealed. All the parts that were not sealed have been inventoried complete. The plans and instructions are in 'excellent+++' condition and the decals are in 'excellent++' condition with light yellowing as the only significant flaw. The box displays better than the 'good' rating but is graded as such because of the heavy edge wear and hole shown on the lower center/left box edge, two factory tape tears on the long sides (about 1.75" long and 3/4" wide) and other general wear as shown. Please note, this kit must be shipped insured. These models have a fascinating history. Before injection molded plastic kits were common, Monogram issued the famous 'Speede-Bilt' and 'Super Kits' which featured injection molded details and precarved wooden parts. Of these, the Speede-Bilt B-24 and B-17 were the finest. These kits are rare today because there was only one issue, their relatively high 1950s price of $4.95 and the fact that injection molded plastic kits came out one year and were taking the US market by storm; it was the end of the wooden kit era.

Monogram B-24 Liberator Speedee-Bilt - Five Star Super Deluxe Kit, 1/60, H4-495

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Dated 1954. Rare, desirable and very collectible one-and-only issue of this classic early multi-media kit with a fantastic internal box presentation. Includes numerous plastic parts in red, gray, clear and black, four unopened glass bottle of Mono*Dope that are still good, an unopened tube of MonoGlue still in the original mint box, all prefabricated wooden parts including the amazing Monofoil wing, three sheets of die-cut and factory painted wood (intact and unpunched), colored die-cut cardstock sheet, sandpaper, gun barrel plastic material, decals in amazing 'excellent' condition, 'near mint' instruction book and full size plans. Inside, the kit is factory new. All of the factory cardboard presentation material is present and in amazing 'near mint++' condition. The kit has never been started. The small parts in the three lower trays are still factory tape sealed. All other pieces were never sealed and they have been carefully inventoried complete with all parts, paperwork, instructions, plans and decals. The box top is graded well above average as 'excellent.' It has superb color and gloss but moderate edge wear at the center top as shown, a light crease at the lower right, other general wear and a very small factory tape tear on thye upper long side measuring 1/2" by 1/4 inch. Amazingly, the celluloid plastic parts range from no warping to very slight warping. This is very rare, as that type of plastic was unstable and warped easily over time. Before injection molded plastic kits were common, Monogram issued the famous 'Speedee-Bilt' and 'Super Kits' which featured injection molded details and precarved wooden parts. Of these, the Speedee-Bilt B-24 and B-17 were the finest. These kits are very rare today due to their relatively high original price of $4.95 and the fact that plastic kits had just come to the US market a year before and were gaining market share very rapidly. This kit must be shipped insured.

Cleveland Douglas O-38 - Flying Model Aircraft, 1/16, SF-43

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. NOTE: the plans are completely usable but have bug damage. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane business- Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's great Recruiter- Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
