Sold

Large scale model of the all-jet Shinden design. Well molded and includes special resin castings. Features full cockpit, detailed landing gear wells, very fine raised panel lines and more. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. The amazing Shinden was a radical design and the first canard aircraft in Japan. The basic design was first tested in the MXY6 motor glider with a 22 hp engine in 1943. The tests were considered a success, and design of the J7W1 begane in June of 1944. Various configurations were tried, and the prototype modeled here has the rear mounted 2000 hp engine, 6 blade prop, 20 degree sweep back to the wing, two vertical stabilizers and four nose mounted 30mm cannon. It flew two weeks before the end of WWII but never saw combat. The Japanese were quick to realize the jet engine advantage and designed a jet powered version which is this model; however it remained on the drawing board and the war ended before a prototype could be built.

Monogram Speedee-Bilt Vought F4U-5 Corsair - Flying Scale Model - (F4U5), G14

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very rare first issue of this highly prefabricated scale rubber powered wood flying model from the early 1950s. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes as this example. The Speedee-Bilt Corsair features die-cut and factory-painted blue wooden parts, completely formed 'Monofoil' airfoil wing, fully carved wooden fuselage nose section, carved and painted wheels, plastic front cowling with engine front, pilot, machine guns & four bladed propeller, clear vacuform canopy (still mint and perfectly clear- no yellowing), rubber motor, full decals, covering tissue (also blue) and more. The instructions are detailed and highly illustrated. Never started. Inventoried and NOTE: missing one small piece, a balsa wood rectangle #15 (gear door). Otherwise includes all other parts, decals and instructions.

RPM Minenraumer - Alkett VsKfz 617 - Operation Citadel Kursk 1943, 1/35, 35100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. From Rob Arndt at strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us: This bizarre armored tractor was jointly designed by Alkett, Krupp and Mercedes-Benz with a silhouette truly worthy of a machine of science fiction. The hull of the vehicle was covered in variable shielding between 10-40 mm, with a floor shielding of 40 mm designed to resist the explosion of multiple mines. The floor itself was reinforced by an additional shielding of 20 mm inside the machine for added protection. The first prototype VsKfz was completed in 1942. The presence of manufacturing plates in the vehicle makes it possible to establish the following conclusions: The manufacturer was Alkett of Berlin and on a plate Nmr VsKfz 617 and Nmr 9537 is engraved. VsKfz 617 refers to a Pzkfw 1 tank and 9537 is the chassis number. That would imply that the turret is of an Ausf. A type but this one has the specific characteristics of an Ausf. B; in particular, the hooks of turret (Traghaken) are located on the top and not the side walls of an Ausf. A. The superstructure possesses a turret of the Pz.Kpfw I tank which is equipped with two 7.92mm MG-34 machine guns ensuring the close defense of the machine. During these ground displacements, the changes of direction were accomplished by orientation of an aft wheel controlled by a system of chains actuated by a wheel. The mobility of the machine was ensured by two enormous discs on which heavy mobile shoes were fixed which were theoretically resistant to the explosions of all mines. These shoes have a form resembling those which equipped the wheels of heavy pieces of German PAK artillery. The principal role of the vehicle was the detonation of mines to obtain a cleared access path for German infantry and AFVs. This was to be achieved by the exercise of a very strong ground pressure using the nine shoes with permanent ground contact. During the trial tests, it proved that this vehicle was unsuited to the operations of modern mechanized warfare. Its ponderous weight, slow speed, and its awkward size made the Minenräumer (minesweeper) a large target for opposing artillery and the project was thus abandoned.
