Revell 1903 Model A Ford Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H36

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair

Sold

1952 first issue in the 'Series One' yellow box. This issue has no part number on the box and strangely does not have 'Parents' Magazine Seal' on the box sides. Also, there is no Gowland & Gowland 'balloon' logo on the side. These issues feature the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. Molded in gloss yellow plastic. This kit has never been started. The wax bag for the small parts is present but split open; the kit kit has been inventoried complete with all pieces present and includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

Revell 1903 Model A Ford Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H36-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

1960 issue hardbox with full artwork; Highway Pioneers prior to this year simply had generic artwork and an ink stamped name on the box ends was the only way to identify the contents. This kit has never been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory bag. Includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Aurora The Barnstormers Customizing Kit DH-4 and JN-4 Jenny, 1/48, 200-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

Sold

Rare one-and-only issue from 1960 that contains both the DH-4 and Curtis JN-4 Jenny. Aurora really went out of the way to make this a special kit; however, it did not catch on and was retired after only one year. Features completely new box artwork, a DH-4 molded in gloss dark green and black, the JN-4 molded in gloss bright yellow and black, great custom decal sheets for both aircraft and special 'Barnstormer' instructions for each aircraft. The kit has never been started. Both models are still in the factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. Instructions are both in 'excellent+' condition and the decal sheets are both almost completely flat with typical age yellowing as the only flaw.

Aurora Fokker DR-1 Triplane - 'Newsprint' Issue, 1/48, 105-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc++++

Sold

1964 issue. Still factory sealed.

Aurora Fokker DR-1 Triplane, 1/48, 105-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM+

Sold

Still factory sealed and in amazing 'Near Mint++' condition. Rare forth issue of this kit and most likely from 1958/ 59. Please note the Sunburst Logo with the 'Famous Fighters' in the border and the lack of a Parents' Magazine logo. Aurora retained the original, classic Jim Cox artwork from the '56 issue but painted out the rectangular logo, replacing it with the new one. For some reason, this and the second issue turn up far less than the others. Aurora experimented with a number of different plastics for sealing, and this is one of the thicker ones.

Revell 1913 Mercedes-Benz Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H54-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

1960 issue hardbox with full artwork; Highway Pioneers prior to this year simply had generic artwork and an ink stamped name on the box ends was the only way to identify the contents. This kit has never been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory bag. Includes instructions. The box would rate slightly higher than the 'very good+' rating but it has some age foxing on the side panels. These kits have a fascinating history. Monogram Speedee-Bilt Spad Pursuit - Flying Scale Model Airplane, G8

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair

Sold

First issue for the advanced Monogram collector. Dates from the late 1940s or early 50s and is an early, completely pre-fabricated multi-media kit featuring pre-colored and die cut balsa wood, precarved balsa, finished Monofoil wing, plastic detail parts (such as cowl and prop) and rubber motor. Designed for rubber free flight or Co2 engine power. Never started. Inventoried and NOTE: missing clear (flat) windshield material. Otherwise inventoried complete with all other wood and plastic parts, decals and instructions included. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowling, pilot, missiles, prop and whatever was required. Assembly was by detailed full size plans and instructions. Monogram carried the Speedee-Bilt line for several years past it's prime and the advent of plastic kits, a testimony to the quality and popularity.

UPC Wells Fargo Stage Coach - With Driver / Messenger and Five Horses (ex Adams / Revell / Miniature Masterpieces /Life-Like), 1/48, 4011-100

Vaccuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

A rare model that is very finely engraved and well detailed. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts present and includes Wells Fargo/US Mail decals and instructions. UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but either leased molds or bought kits already molded from other manufacturers and re-boxed them in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did UPC box art in the 1960s including this model. All UPC production ended in the 1970s. This kit has a fascinating history. It started life as one of the 'Miniature Masterpieces,' which was the brainchild of an alliance between Lou Glasser (Revell) and Steve Adams (Adams Action Models) in 1953. Although having the appearance of an independent company, the firm was run by Revell right down to the prototypes being made at the Revell plant. However, there was no evidence of the parent company on the surface. The State Coach of England was the first kit, issued in 1953. More kits of excellent quality followed. Revell completely took over the line in 1954, making the one-year original issues very rare. However, while Revell was now issuing them under their name, Adams was also issuing the line in 1958. Production was discontinued by both companies in the early 1960s; the molds then ended up with UPC. By the early 1970s, Life-Like ended up with many of the Adams molds and wound up owning the complete, original 'Miniature Masterpieces' line. Life-Like reissued them several times in that decade but the current whereabout of the molds are not known.
