When the Me-209 was dismissed as the 109s successor, design work began on the 309. It was intended to be a high speed, long range heavy attack fighter with an ejection seat and pressurized cockpit. Four were built, but the RLM never assigned any priority to the project. By that time, the jet-powered Me-262 showed more promise and work on the 309 was stopped.
