Guillows Spitfire - Flying Aircraft Model, 50-10

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$22

Rare stick-and-tissue model dated 1954. This was part of Guillow's extensive '50' line of models with wingspans between 16 and 24 inches. These were very advanced kit for their day, featuring all die-cut balsa parts, stripwood and spars, plastic cowl and wheels, , completely finished wheels and thrust button, plastic prop, metal prop shaft, covering tissue and superb plans with numerous construction details. Never started. NOTE: missing canopy. Otherwise inventoried with all other parts and plans. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Around 1949 the USAF assigned a high priority to all weather fighter design and deployment. Most manufacturers built traditional two seat machines, such as the F-94. North American, however took a new approach and created one of the first true "One-Man Interceptors". Keeping the wings and landing gear from the proven F-86 Day Fighter, they made a longer and deeper fuselage with a large radome and J47 engine. Guns were replaced with 24 2.75" folding fin rockets. Although more than a ton heavier than the F-86, the Dog was the fasted aircraft of it's day and set several world records. 2,504 were built and formed the backbone of America's air defense system in the 1950s.

The box is in 'very good' condition with great color and gloss, some creases as shown, no fading, no split corners, no tape, one price tag on a short side and no repairs. The model has working features. When you move a small switch on the bottom of the fuselage, it launches a spring-loaded torpedo. Also, the ailerons move, wheels rotate and the props spins. Inside, the kit is as it left the factory. It is molded in dark green, black and clear and all parts and decals are still sealed in the factory bag. Even includes the original glue. Complete with instructions, which are also excellent.
