Nichimo IJN Mutsu Battleship Motorized, 1/500

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very Rare. First issue with high-gloss collectible artwork from the 'Golden Age' of Japanese boxart; this one clearly shows Mutsu on a better day than her eventual fate. These early issues did not have part numbers. Nichimo was founded in 1951 and was among the first post-war model kit makers. Nichimo quickly became popular in Japan for high quality and most if not all hobby shops carried their kits. American military men serving in Japan and the Pacific quickly discovered these kits and spread the word, which helped lead to world-wide distribution. In the late 1950s or early 1960s they cut molds for a series of very popular 1/500 scale IJN battleships and cruisers; all early issues were motorized and had fantastic artwork. This model is designed for motorized operation in water or can be built for static full-hull or waterline display. It features a Mabuchi RE-26 motor in the original colorful box, motorizing hardware with switch, all steel & brass gear box for dual propeller drive, dual stuffing boxes, threaded metal propeller shafts, universal connectors, wiring and brass battery contacts, one piece lower hull molded in a very realistic 'IJN Hull Red', one piece (gray) upper hull, detailed deck and superstructure, rotating main turrets (one is the power switch - rotate the turret to turn on the motor), secondary turrets and AA guns, catapults and more. The kit has never been started. The plastic parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags with color headers. The hardware bag is still factory sealed also with a color header. Includes full color flag sheet and large-format, roll-out instructions. Please NOTE that the box has had some very neatly done internal repairs. These were done correctly with light weight cardstock and book binding glue at two corners (one to repair a split and one to reinforce due to a short split) and one long side with a closed tear. .

Revell 1953 Jaguar XK-120 Highway Pioneers - Series 4, 1/32, H56-69

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

1953 original issue of the famous Highway Pioneers 'Foreign Car' series. This kit has never been started. All parts are still in the factory sealed bag. Includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

Aoshima IJN Unryu Aircraft Carrier, 1/700, WLA083

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

This waterline model is highly detailed and finely molded. Includes aircraft. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. The Japanese aircraft carrier Unryu was the lead ship of her class of fleet aircraft carriers built for the IJN during World War II. The Unryu were the last purpose-designed Japanese carriers to be built during the war. The ships were based on an improved Hiryu design; early sisters Hiryu and Soryu packed and incredible number of aircraft given their size and weight, making them excellent bargains. The Unryu class was part of the 'Rapid Naval Armaments Supplement Programme' of 1941. The class leader was one of 16 carriers planned, but only three were completed. She was commissioned in mid-1944, but fuel and aircrew shortages limited her training and ASW operations in Japanese waters. However, once the Naval Staff became certain of the American invasion of Luzon, Unryu was ordered to transport thirty Yokosuka MXY7 Ōhka kamikaze rocket planes and supplies to the Philippines and departed on her first mission 17 December,1944. During this voyage, she was spotted by the American submarine USS Redfish (almost certainly with help from ULTRA) in the East China Sea. Redfish fired a spread of 4 torpedoes, one of which hit directly under the bridge. This hit caused extensive damage which stopped Unryu. Repairs were quickly made and in just 15 minutes she was ready to get underway again. However, at that moment, a second torpedo hit next to the forward aircraft elevator, which was near the storage tanks for high explosive aviation gasoline. The Ohka rocket planes had very large warheads and were stored in the lower hanger deck; when the gas tanks exploded, that set off the warheads in the Ohkas. This essentially blew the bow off the ship and caused other unknown but extensive damage. She immediately took on a 30 degree list and the captain ordered the ship abandoned. A list of 90 degrees came very quickly and the ship sank bow first. Casualties were very heavy; 238 officers & crewmen lost their lives. Only 145 men survived to be rescued by Shigure, which was the IJN's 'lucky' or 'unsinkable' ship and the only Japanese warship to survive WWII intact.
