Monogram B-52 Stratofortress With Jet Sound - Vietnam Issue, 1/72, PA215

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM++

Sold

Rare issue has Vietnam-style boxart on a high-gloss box. 2nd release of this kit and the last with 'Jet Sound'. This model has been opened but is in investment grade condition. These models were designed with a major selling point - an internal parts display that could be seen by potential modelers at the store. The display showed major parts of the kit, glue and motor and called out numerous selling points. Then the factory shrink-wrapped these kits inside or glued a clear cello panel with a yellow cardboard boarder. Then box lid was installed and it was not shrink-wrapped again, so that the kit could be inspected at the point of sale. This is an issue with the cello and yellow cardboard. It was removed but is in mint condition. Inside, all cardboard presentation is still mint and everything is just as it left the factory down to the tissue paper. At this point (1968), Monogram had ceased making 'Monoglue', but the B-52 presentation cardboard has a spot for glue - so the factory put in a tube of 1968 Testors glue with rubber bands (I have seen Testors glue inside this kit that was factory sealed). Contains 207 parts. Very nicely detailed. Features crew of three, detailed cockpit, elevating and traversing rear turret, opening and closing bomb bay doors, operating wing flaps, operating spoilers, optional position entry hatch and landing gear, and optional parts to display one nacelle open to show the jet engine. Never started. Factory sealed bag or 100% inventoried with all parts decals and instructions present.

In some cases, the specific car and owner is on the box - in this case, a Renault at the Montagu Motor Museum in England. The model includes rubber tires, brass plated parts, colored injection molded parts and clear parts. Features detailed chassis, complete motor and interior and a removable hood or 'bonnet'. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete including instructions.

Aircraft Admiral Graf Spee or Deutschland / Admiral Sheer - 12.25 Inch Long Wooden Ship Kit, 1/600, 16

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Very rare kit from the late 1930s. Features a completely precarved hardwood hull that needs final sanding only. The quality of the hull is excellent. There are two sheets of thick and thin balsa printwood, wood stock as needed, sand paper and full size plans/instructions. It has never been started and is complete. This model is rare in that it is from Gordon Christoph's 'Aircraft Model Company'. This company was founded in the early 1930s and the boxes state the company name simply as 'Aircraft'. Some ship kits were produced but they are hard to find. Jack Mair, a former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. Mair continued with the same logo and 1/48 scale and went on to make one of the rarest and valuable 1/48 scale wooden kits ever - the Maircraft DC-3. The company went out of business just as production began on the DC-3, which was in 1947.

Cleveland Seversky XP-35 Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, SF-61

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot’s English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called “The Aviation Craze” that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh’s flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world’s longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called ‘Aviation’s great Recruiter – Cleveland’s Ed Packard’ by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
