The Northrop XP-79, USAAF project number MX-365, was rocket and jet-powered flying wing fighter aircraft, designed by Northrop. The pilot operated the aircraft in a prone position, permitting him to withstand much greater g-forces in pitch. It also used a welded magnesium monocoque structure instead of riveted aluminum. The incredible strength of the aircraft was it's offensive power: it was designed to use a rocket motor to climb quickly above the attacking enemy bomber stream, then dive down and remove the vertical stabilizer of the enemy aircraft by ramming. The strongly built XP-79 would survive the impact, but enemy bomber would be destabilized without a vertical stabilizer and crash. The rocket design proved unsatisfactory in practice, so the aircraft was fitted with two Westinghouse 19B turbojets and re-designated XP-79B. Following delays due to burst tires and brake problems during taxiing trials at Muroc dry lake, the XP-79B made its first flight on the 12th of September, 1945. However, 15 minutes into the flight control was lost for unknown reasons while performing a slow roll. The nose dropped, and the roll continued with the aircraft impacting the ground in a vertical spin. Test pilot Harry Crosby had attempted to bail out but was struck by the aircraft and died. Shortly thereafter, the project was canceled along with work on the second prototype.

Life-Like Combat Jeep And Trailer - With 3 GIs - (ex Revell), 1/40, 09652

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+

Sold

Well molded and detailed featuring rotating wheels, radio, jerry cans, detailed chassis and suspension, tilting windshield, driver/soldier and general figure, detachable trailer with rotating wheels, generator, cable reel, packs, tool box and more. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in 1955 or 1956, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Adams never issued the kit. UPC (Universal Power Master) had use of these molds in the 1960s are perhaps the early 1970s; however, the molds were probably in Japan as most if not all the UPC production occurred there. Things get even more interesting with this Life-Like issue, which must have been after UPC ceased operation. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk-purchase of molds that were located overseas. This is simply conjecture, however.
