Pyro did an very nice job of capturing the lines of this famous clipper, which was one of fifty designed and built by Donald McKay. The Flying Cloud set the record for the voyage from New York to San Francisco on her maiden voyage. The time, 89 days and 21 hours was only beat when she bettered this record by 7 hours. She was 235 feet long with a beam of 40 feet and 8 inches. There were over a million feet of oak in her hull. The Flying Cloud ended her days as a lumber boat between St. John, Newfoundland and London. In June of 1875 she was wrecked off the New Brunswick coast. It has been said that the ear of the clipper ship came to a close when they burned her hulk for the scrap metal that was inside.

1956 early issue molded in bright green plastic. This kit has never been started. It has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

Revell SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) German WWI Commerce Raider, 1/232, H382-298

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Rare 1960 hardbox first issue with John Steel artwork. This is a kit of a fantastic subject -the famous WWI sailing commerce raider of Count Felix Von Luckner. Very well detailed kit. Full hull kit is molded in gray, brown and black and includes rigging thread and full rigging instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes flag shhet and instructions. NOTE: the stand is cleanly broken in two. Both parts are present. The SMS Seeadler was a unique WWI raider in that it was not designed to elude the British blockade and break out to sea...it was designed to pass right through the blockade within full view of the British before attacking allied shipping around the world. No detail was overlooked in the Seeadler's preparation, right down to a Norwegian-speaking crew. The plan went perfectly - and the Seeadler passed inspection at the British Blockade. Her non-threatening appearance helped her in an active and colorful raiding career that nearly went around the world. I highly recommend reading any of several books that you can find about this ship. Von Luckner himself became quite a celebrity for his exciting exploits.
