Airfix DH Comet 4B Dan-Air - Classic Airliners Special Edition, 1/144, 04176

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+++

Sold

From 1994. Nice 1/144 scale kit of the world's first jet airliner. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. The initial Comet I was in operation long before the 707, which gave the British an incredible post-war lead in the expanding civil aviation market. Just as the Comet was flying high and orders were pouring in from around the world, Comets began to mysteriously fall out of the sky. Everything from lighting to terrorist bombs were blamed. For months the root cause went undiscovered. Then, in a landmark investigation that is considered the first modern post-crash autopsy, it was discovered that the stresses around a small ADF window on the top of the fuselage were causing metal fatigue failure when the fuselage was pressurized. To confirm this, a Comet I was placed in a water tank and subjected to pressurization stresses. After some time, a dramatic failure occurred. Then parts of a crashed Comet were pulled from underwater proving once and for all that this was the root cause.

The model includes real rubber tires, chrome plated parts, clear windshields and light lenses and red injection molded parts. Features detailed chassis with suspension, gas tank and steering linkage, complete motor and interior, spoked wheels, optional convertible top and removable hood. The kit has never been started. Revell BB-38 USS Pennsylvania - Sea Power and Master Modelers Club Issue, 1/426, H422-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM+

Sold

The most desirable issue in investment-grade 'Near Mint+' condition inside and out. The box has factor-fresh color and gloss, no tape or tags and no marks from either, no missing or torn litho, no fading and no split or repaired corners. The only wear is very, very light, what you would expect from being put in the Revell shipping carton and then removed from it. 1961 Sea Power hardbox release which includes the rare Pennsylvania trading stamp ("mint" condition) and two trading cards depicting the B-29 Pacific Raiders art and F-106 Whip-Fly issue art (both "mint"). Inside, the kit is like new, with all parts still in the factory sealed bag and the instructions still in "mint" condition. The Pennsylvania was in dry-dock during the December 7th Pearl Harbor attack and survived with minimal damage. She was rebuilt and saw significant action in the Pacific in WWII, steaming over 150,000 miles from 1941 to 1945. It is thought that she may have fired more ammunition than any ship in history. She never once reported 'Not Ready' for any operation or need. After being used as a nuclear test ship at Bikini, she was towed to Kwajalein and sunk.

ITC Halibut SSGN 587 Cam-A-Matic Submarine - (Electric Powered Diving Motorized Regulus Sub), 1/175, 3660-998

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

From 1960. This model is the zenith of the ITC Design and Engineering Team, and maybe of all operational plastic model kits. It is not only rare but is considered the most complicated operating model ever produced. The large 24.75 inch submarine sails from the power of a large electric motor driving twin geared propellers. It changes headings, dives, surfaces, and a Regulus II missile comes out of the hanger and launches...all automatically. The engineering on this kit is fantastic and a major break-through for that time. The model worked, and did work well, but was certainly not a toy for inexperienced model builders. The high price ($9.98) and difficulties that youngsters had with assembly and operation made for a short production run. The fact the ITC left the model business for good shortly after releasing the kit contributed to the scarcity as well. The boxtop displays much better than the 'good' grade; I have graded it 'good' because the box has missing litho along the very bottom center, smaller missing areas on the corners and right side, general shelf wear and one closed split on two corners. I very carefully repaired the worse one correctly- from the inside with strips of cardstock and book binding glue. Inside, the kit is in excellent condition. It has never been started. All the parts have been inventoried 100% complete. The original bags are present but were open. The decals (stickers) are 'excellent' as are the instructions. The blue display cardboard is all present and in 'excellent' condition. NOTE: this kit must be shipped insured.

Renwal See-Thru SSBN 618 Thomas Jefferson Polaris Nuclear Submarine, 1/200, 653

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Classic 1950s boxart at it's finest and the rarest of all the Renwal SSBNs. Large 24 inch long kit with clear right half that is hinged to open. The Jefferson is the only Renwal sub that has the clear hull half - all others have a gray hinged half. The clear hull half model has never been reissued. The clear half is in excellent condition and still wrapped in the protective factory paper. Heavily detailed interior and actual 'launching' Polaris missile from a spring loaded missile launch tube. This kit has never been started. All parts have been inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions.

Sterling Hal Krier's Great Lakes Special - 24 inch Wingspan for R/C / Control Line / Freeflight, A24

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. Purchased new on April 19, 1967 at Bell's Models in Cleveland, OH. This kit is part of Sterling's expensive big-wingspan series that was designed for R/C and also includes numerous extra parts for control line operation. Can also be flown free-flight. Features large, full color decal sheet, high-grade die cut balsa, die cut plywood, vacuform plastic cowl with engine detail, wheel pants and pilot, clear canopy material, carved and painted wood main and tail wheels, finished wire landing gear, rubber motor and plastic prop, carved wooden thrust button, control line handle, firewall, elevator horn platform, metal hardware and pushrod wire, full size plans with instruction details and full instructions for conversion to RC or control line. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they had the action features and included everything needed to complete the model.

Comet Ryan SC - 15 inch Wingspan Powered Flying Model, 3103

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

1980s issue. Kit features traditional stick and tissue construction, detailed full size plans, building instructions, hardware, wheels and canopy material (if required), tissue, rubber and propeller. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
