Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Topping Hiller 12E / UH-12 / OH-23, 1/32

Metal and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Very, very rare. From a professional builder's collection. He lived in Ohio and had full access to Topping and Precise factory models and could obtain them unassembled (some were even factory painted and decaled!). This model is from his estate. This is an original, never assembled Topping but most parts are factory painted, including the tail rotor, canopy frames (flawlessly done) and almost all small parts. Even the instrument panel decals are applied. The kit is resin, injection molded plastic, cast metal and clear plastic. The resin frame is perfectly straight and is not warped. I have studied on-line photos of Topping-built OH-23s and I believe this model is 100% complete; but I cannot be sure so it is sold as-is. Factory built-ups do occasionally appear for sale (just a handful since the history of the internet), but I have never seen this model in kit form. NOTE: I have listed this as 1/32 because the body length comes out very close to this. I could be wrong; some sources list it as 1/35.

Big 1/12 scale model with a 40 inch wingspan. Originally designed as a gas powered model for free flight or control line, or can be converted to electric power and modern RC (radio control) gear. Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.
