ESCI Rorke's Drift 1879 Diroama Zulu War Battle, 1/72, P-506

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Rare. An excellent diorama model of the famous defensive action fought by the British against the overwhelming forces of the warrior-king Cetshwago. Includes a very large vacuform display with the house, dozens of Zulu warrior with accessories, dozens of English soldiers and two trees of reinforcement accessories. Never used and inventoried complete with all parts and instructions. Rorke's Drift was a farmhouse that had been transformed into a hospital-depot and it was occupied by about 80 men of Company B of the 24th English Line Regiment and about a hundred or so African reserve troops all under command of Lieutenants Chard and Bromhead. The defenders learned of the massacre at Isandhlwana on January 22, 1879. A few survivors got to Rorke's and warned them, or their fate would have been the same. As 4,000 Zulu warriors charged towards their position, the English decided to fight to the last man and began preparations to hold the spot. They only had about an hour or so - early that afternoon, the Zulu warrior showed up and the battle began. The battle went all afternoon, evening and into the night; there were losses on both sides. At the first light of dawn, the English awaited the final assault, but it never came. The attackers had been decisively weakened and preferred to retreat, leaving the defenders dumbfounded.

In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
