Sterling USCG Eagle - 11.25 inch long Solid Wood Ship with Cloth Sails and Metal Fittings, G9

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. In the late 1970s/early 1980s Sterling issued these simplified wood kits for beginners. They included a completely carved hull with very little sanding needed to complete. Also included are full size plans, printwood, fully shaped wooden parts, cast metal fittings, pre-cut blocks, hardwood dowels, instructions, standing and running rigging line, rigging diagrams and printed cloth sails. I remember building some of these - it was an ideal project for someone who had never built a solid wooden kit but wanted the experience. Sterling had quite a line at this point - the box side mentions almost 150 different kits to choose from! From this series the following are listed: G1 Spanish Galleon, G2 Frigate Constitution, G3 Schooner Bluenose, G4 HMS Bounty, G5 Golden Hind, G6 Pirate Brig, G7 Emma C Berry and G8 Charles W. Morgan.

Comet Piper Cub Struct-O-Speed - Coke Bottle Issue, K2-50

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Dated 1951. This is a semi-scale, highly prefabricated rubber powered free-flight balsa kit with a wingspan of 13.25 inches. This is a 3D kit (not a profile model) of all die-cut balsa and a beautiful fully finished one-piece wood wing with airfoil. Includes clear and template for windshield, a factory sealed envelope of small parts and illustrated and text instructions, flying tips and more. Complete and never started. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Sterling Great Lakes Trainer - 36 inch Wingspan Flying Model, C13

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Superb kit from the 1960s or early 70s. Designed for control line flight with .19 to .35 engines. Features die-cut and inter-notched balsa and plywood parts, shaped and notched leading and trailing edges, hardwood motor mounts, formed wire landing gear, molded plastic cowling, hardware pack, silk-span covering, authentic decals, extensive full size plans and more. The kit has never been started. The smaller parts are still in factory sealed bags; the parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete and includes decals and instructions. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I personally considered Sterlings to be 'deluxe' kits.
