Cleveland Curtiss Hawk P-6E - 23.6 Inch Wingspan Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-21

Vaccuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

This is a late 1930s/early 1940s 'Deluxe Edition' of this Cleveland SF ('Scale Flying') model in museum scale of 1/16. This exact model is one of the finest examples that I have seen. It has a 'Very Good+' condition box, includes all of the original internal cardboard presentation material, glass bottles of liquids (glue and dope) and is never started and complete. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Because it is the deluxe version, it comes with a set of four large glass bottles of factory fluids - paint/dope and glue - still factory sealed in brown paper and factory tape, very high quality balsa printwood and pre-cut strip wood, balsa blocks, other wood and metal stock as required, completely finished wheels, black fiber propeller blades, a small paper envelope with smaller parts inside, clear material for the canopy and covering material. Includes Cleveland's highest quality plans. Never started and it has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes instructions. After the original 1960s issue, Pyro re-marketed the Harriett Lane as the 'Lavinia', which was what the Confederates renamed her when they captured her and made her a blockage runner. Eventually, Lindberg purchased the Pyro molds and there have been several reissues of the popular kit. The Harriett Lane was built in 1858 and named for President Buchanan's niece. The cutter was 180 feet long with a 30 foot beam and displacement was 670 tons. Armament consisted of 3-9 inch Dahlgrens and 1-30 lb Parrot Rifle. She was built at a time when steam was not fool-proof, so she is rigged for full sails. Harriett Lane served as the Presidential Yacht, the fired the first shot of the Civil War. She chased down blockade runners until January 1, 1863 when she was attacked by five Confederate Gun Boats and boarded. She was captured and renamed the Lavinia and was used as a blockade runner. Near the end of the war she caught fire at sea, and put into Havana Harbor. Federal forces took her again and rebuilt her in 1869 as the bark 'Elliot Ritchie'. She was abandoned at sea in 1884.

The sales success of the Knight prompted Aurora to launch an entire line of figure kits. The knights themselves stayed in production long after many other figures were discontinued.

Lindberg Sea Raider - (ex Q-Ship - Decoy Ship) (AK-101 USS ATIK), 1/390, 731-69

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

Sold

Very rare hardbox issue from the late 1950s. This classic kit has great Ray Gaedke artwork on the box top and inside it is the Lindberg Q Ship, which has an unknown prototype but is suppose to be a WWI style Q-Ship submarine trap. The ship appears to be a WWI British Q Ship by the title, yet looks a little modern and has US numbers of 171, which apparently mean nothing. The Lindberg model actually has the layout of the AK-101 USS ATIK, which was formerly the SS-CAROLYN, built in 1912. The CAROLYN was recommissioned as the USS ATIK and at the start of WWI which was a real US Q-ship. The box is in 'very good+++' condition with excellent color and gloss, four solid corners and light general wear. This kit has never been started. It has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Rare small-scale Frog aircraft kit from the 1950s with wonderful box artwork. Finely molded with all recessed panel lines and includes clear stand and glue capsule. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Blue, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

In the mid 1960s, the Frog decided to use one box for all of the 'Orange' Series large-scale jet bombers. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions.

Merlin Models Hawker Hind Frog Penguin Replica, 1/72

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+

Sold

Still factory tape sealed. Have you ever wanted to build the world's first injection molded plastic kits? Well, now you can and for an affordable price. As you know, Frog in England produced the world's first plastic model kits starting back in 1938. Merlin Models receive permission for this very limited edition, exact replica of this historic Frog Penguin kit. Nicely molded model usually includes photocopies of the original Penguin instructions (I cannot confirm that since the kit is still factory sealed). In the late 1930s, before WWII, Frog created the world's first line of injection molded plastic model kits. Since Frog stood for 'Flies Right Off the Ground' and Frog had a famous line of flying models, the world's first all injection molded kits were called Frog Penguin for the bird that does not fly. The Penguin Hart was among the early pre-war releases by Frog.
