The Type 90 Aircraft Carrier fighter was the first ship-born fighter designed and built in Japan. Nakajima worked out a design and had trial production for a new fighter to replace the old Type 3 fighter. This design, called the NY, failed Navy trials. However, Nakajima changed to another designer, Mr. Kurihara and he came up with another fighter called NY Kai which was equipped with a newly developed Kotobuki type engine. The prototype was done in May of 1931 and this design proved superior to the existing Type 3 fighter. it was officially adapted by the Navy as the Type 90 Carrier Fighter in April of 1932.

Originally designed and laid down as a battle cruiser, the Lexington was converted to the 2nd aircraft carrier in the US Navy. Her battlecruiser speed was legendary and the four twin 8 inch turrets made her 'The Largest Heavy Cruiser Afloat.' After absorbing a great deal of battle damage in the Coral Sea in 1942, the Lady Lex had to be abandoned due to internal avgas explosions after the battle. The fully enclosed hanger deck, which was unique at the time, may have contributed to the fume build up.
