By 1943 the Japanese Emprise had to cope with not only a lack of raw materials suitable for aircraft production but also with a lack of qualified experts in this field. The Air Force Command decided to modify and rebuilt some proven designs using non-strategic materials such as wood and to disperse manufacturing to outside areas that work with wood, such as furniture & automobile production. In 1943 this was only applied to training and school aircraft. The Yokosuka D3Y1-K was a full-wood training dive bomber for the Imperial Navy. It mounted a Mitsubishi Kinsei 54 air cooled radial engine and was given the name Myojo (Venus). Production was entrusted to the small Matsushita company, which produced only three by the surrender.
