Very nicely detailed and molded kit from 1980. Features clear windows, full landing gear and passenger boarding stairs. Includes colorful Dan-Air London decals. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The initial Comet Is were in operation long before the 707, which gave the British an incredible post-war lead in the expanding civil aviation market. Just as the Comet was flying high and orders were pouring in from around the world, Comets began to mysteriously fall out of the sky. Everything from lighting to terrorist bombs were blamed. For months the root cause went undiscovered. Then, in a landmark investigation that is considered the first modern post-crash autopsy, it was discovered that the stresses around a small ADF window on the top of the fuselage were causing metal fatigue failure when the fuselage was pressurized. To confirm this, a Comet I was placed in a water tank and subjected to pressurization stresses. After some time, a dramatic failure occurred. Then parts of a crashed Comet were pulled from underwater proving once and for all that this was the root cause.

Rare 1950s hardbox issue with dramatic Ray Gaedke artwork. This is a well detailed larger scale kit that features an electric motor and hardware for water operation, one-piece hull, detailed deck and superstructure & more. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The box has superb color and gloss. It would rate higher than 'excellent' but is rated as such because there is one closed split on one corner at the lower left. This model has a fascinating history. It was originally produced by Varney in 1944. It was novel at the time as it had a wooden hull, cardstock deck but the deck fittings, superstructure and other details were injection molded tenite. When the early Varney aircraft and ship kits did not sell well, Gorden Varney sold the molds for the kit to O-lin (Olsen and Lindberg). O-Lin reworked the kit using a vacuform hull, cardstock deck, metal railings and tenite parts. When Lindberg took full control of O-lin, he modified the molds for a third time so the kit has metal railings but all other parts are injection molded. In the fourth and final modification (this kit), all parts are injection molded plastic.

The box is in amazing investment grade 'near mint' condition with like-new color and gloss, four solid corners, no repairs, fading, creases or stains. Light general wear and tape marks on the two longs sides are the only flaw. This is the second issue of this kit for the USA, with added fine rivet detail and molded in silver and clear. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts decals and instructions. This kit started as a basic 1/48 scale model with full landing gear, rockets and bombs. Surface detail was minimal Lindberg modified it in the mid 1950s with fine raised panel lines and tasteful rivet detail. In the late 1950s, they modified it again to a motorized version with the batteries in the stand and a kit electric motor in the nose. Lindberg is a company with a fascinating history The original 'Lindberg Line' stretches back to the 1930s when Paul Lindberg drew plans for famous modeling magazines and marketed his balsa wood 'stick and tissue' by urging dealers to carry the '...Complete Lindberg Line'. After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufacturers.
