Hawk Howard Ike Racer - Lincoln International Issue - Bagged, 1/48

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Good

$36

From the 1950s. Rare kit for the advanced Hawk collector. Still factory sealed but the header panel is in 'good' condition. I have shown the best side; the reverse has a price tag tear. This kit was 'Made in the British Empire by Lincoln International.' Lincoln was an injection molding firm that issued models as a side-line. Kits were made in Great Britain, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand and sold in many more countries. They reissued at least 13 Hawk kits. I have dated these late 1950s because the R3C-1 Army Racer (also released in this series) still has wheels. Later issues had floats.

Hawk Curtiss Racer R3C-1 - One Piece Box Issue 1946 - (R3C1), 1/48, 600

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

$150

For the advanced model collector. This is a model kit with a fascinating history as it may be among the very first injection molded kits produced in the United States (please see the article about early USA kit production on this website). The Hawk model company was the most innovative in America and had been making constant 1/48 scale models in wood and metal since the late 1920s. During the re-run of the World's Fair in 1933, Hawk may have made the world's first injection molded airplanes models - but they were not kits. The models were completely finished and were on display for the princely sum of $25 each. The Mates brothers, who founded and ran Hawk, were quick to incorporate this new technology by adding injection molded details to the wooden kits in the late 1930s. During the war, Hawk put it's injection molding knowledge to work making ID models for the US Armed Forces. Originally there was a nation-wide program to have children and adults make these from wood, but consistency was an issue - injection molded solved this problem. Immediately after WWII in 1946, Hawk made the Curtiss Racer model injection molded in black tenite. The box was a simple one-color affair. This kit, like Varney's PT-17, met a very cool reception at hobby shops. Hawk quickly changed the box to two colors, added box artwork and molding the kit in bright yellow acetate plastic. That makes it the second issue, still from 1946, and that is this kit for sale here. The box is in very good condition with great colors. There is tape on both end flaps. The box has not been crushed or flattened, which is unusual. These came in one-piece boxes and they are not very strong. Inside, the kit has minor assembly. The fuselage 1/2s have been glued. The quality of assembly is excellent - there are no gaps and no glue showing. There is no other assembly. The kit is 100% complete with all parts. The small parts are still sealed in the 'crinkle' bag. The instructions are in as new condition. Please note that Hawk did not issue decals with this issue of this kit.

Hawk F-84F Thunderstreak - One-Piece Box Issue, 1/72, 606

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$40

Rare early issue Hawk kit in the flip-top box. Hawk was a manufacturer of 1/48 constant scale solid wooden models well before plastic, but they jumped on the plastic band wagon very early. Most of the first issue 'flip box' plastic kits were 1/48 - this kit, however, is one of the earlier 1/72 scale kits from Hawk. The kit is molded in the correct silver with the early style stand and correct instructions and decals. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Thanks to Jean-Claude who told me that the boxart shows a standard F-84F but in reality the model inside is of prototype YF-96A, (aka YF-84F), s/n 49-2430. this aircraft was later modified to become the YRF-84F parasite fighter in combination with GRB-36F.It is on display at the USAF Museum, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio.

Hawk Triangle Box F4D Skyray, 1/72, 402

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Rare Triangle Box issue from the late 1950s. As a marketing experiment, Hawk tried this novel and colorful box only with the Skyray. Dealers found it difficult to stack with other kits and it was discontinued. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. This box is very good. Luckily, it is missing the factory tape seals that are usually across the top corners. There are no price tags and no other tape. The box has not been repaired. There is edge wear, some creasing and a short tear on the bottom but no litho or cardboard is missing.

Revell Harbor Tug Long Beach - Pre S Issue, 1/108, H314-129

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$110

Rare 1955 Revell model with the great box artwork that has made these kits so famous and collectible. This large-scale model features excellent detail for that time and almost all items shown in the box art - railings, grates, name boards, navigation lights, vents, whistles, bumpers, bitts and even two crew members. NOTE: this kit has minor, 'professional' quality subassembly as follows: cover to lifeboat; rudder & small mount (for the propeller) to the hull; lower superstructure (5 pieces, four walls and roof). There is no other assembly. Inventoried 100% complete and includes decals and instructions. The box rates only 'very good' because it has isolated and light age spotting as shown.
