Guillows Dawn Patrol Biplane Glider British SE-5 - Bagged, 45A

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed

$34

1970s issue that is still factory sealed. It can be assembled in less than a minute and was ready to fly! The famous Dawn Patrol Biplanes can as this SE-5 or a Fokker D-7 and feature light-weight plastic wing struts and pilot bust/machine gun and all die-cut balsa parts. There detailed and illustrated assembly instructions on the back along with balance and flying instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2014.

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$75

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. This is an early cardboard box issue with silver printing. All Cleveland kits were very complete and this one is no exception. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. NOTE: there is light bug damage to the paperwork. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane business- Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's great Recruiter- Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Later, Sweden ordered 52 which carried the designation B6.In June 1940, the United States government ordered an embargo on the sale of U.S. made aircraft to all foreign countries except Britain. Sweden had received two aircraft of their order, and the remaining 50 were sold to the United States Army Air Corps and designated the AT-12 Guardsman. It is unlikely that any AT-12 served as an advanced trainer, however, as most were allocated during World War 2 to USAAC base commanding officers as fast transport aircraft. Marvel was a popular manufacture with a large line of army vehicles, tanks of all nations, aircraft and more.

Maircraft SE-5 Pursuit Scout, 1/48, S24

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$24

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is about 3D (~80%) cut, profile cut parts, printwood, color insignia and a small sealed envelope of details. The model has not been started and is complete with all parts and plans.

Monogram Little Air Force Assortment Gift Set Speedee-Bilt F-84 And Speedee-Bilt F-51 And Superkit F-51 (P-51) And Superkit F-84

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$795

Very rare 1950s gift set. Long before injection molded kit were mass produced in the USA, Monogram created what are widely considered the finest pre-fabricated wooden kits with plastic details. The Speedee-Bilt series were flying models with pre-painted and cut wooden parts with plastic props, cowls, pilots, etc. The Superkits were smaller static models with precarved wooden parts and many plastic details. The kits themselves are rare today, but the gift set is very rare. Monogram issued very few gift sets for injection kits, and even fewer in the early 1950s for the wooden kits. The gift set consists of a special 'Christmas' box with a tray and lift-off top with a cello window. This one contains 2 Superkits (F-84 Thunderjet and F-51 Mustang) and 2 Speedee-Bilts (also the F-84 and F-51). The outer box is intact with the original cello and is in 'very good' displayable condition but is not perfect. It has edge wear, general wear, light staining (visible at the upper left) and two closed split corners. The four kits inside are in mint boxes and have never started. Each is 100% inventoried complete with all parts, decals and instructions present.

Midwest Wally Simmers' Sniffer - 29.5 Inch Wingspan Contest or Sport Free flight Model Airplane, SN-301

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$62

Built for 'Sniffing Thermals', the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and early gas powered models, all powered by Brown engines, took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) models could not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all without any operator inputs once the airplane took off. Getting the wing up out of the propeller airflow was a huge improvement, and this type of design proliferated. This is one example of a parasol (with a clever cabin) style 1940s free-flight competition aircraft designed by Wally Simmers. This quality kit includes die-cut printwood, strip wood, fully finished wheels, fully formed wire landing gear struts, die-cut clear windshield, covering tissue and beautiful full size plans. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and paperwork present. Please note that while no work has been done, some parts are neatly (adult) punched out, mainly wing ribs.

Marvel Douglas 8A-5 / A-33 Attack Bomber - Battle Planes Of America Series - Solid Wood Aircraft, 1/48

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair-

$34

Rare solid model from 1942. At that time, their were 'fliers' and 'solids.' 'Fliers' were notoriously off-scale so they would fly well and also lacked detail. 'Solids' were true scale models that were solid wood and designed only to be scale miniatures (they did not fly). This kit has a worn box missing the end flaps, but inside it is complete with all parts and full-size plans with instructions and a description of this rare aircraft. There are three sheets of printwood and a block for the fuselage. The model has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and plans present. Please note, this is war time model so compressed fibre-board has been substituted for balsa wood. Marvel Mfg. Company was located in Seaford, Long Island, New York and had an extensive line of solid aircraft, wooden ships, army tanks and more. Just as a small example, the following are advertised on the back of this larger-scale solid kit: Grumman JRF-2, Mariner PBM-1, Bell YFM-1, P-38, P-40, Baltimore, Ryan STM-2, Curtiss AT-9, Douglas A-20A, Republic Guardsman, Grumman Skyrocket and Douglas 8A-5.
