The I-4 was the first Soviet all metal fighter with an air cooled engine. The 'corrugation' is actually 'fluted chain aluminum armour' but the upper sides are flat metal. The prototype was designed by the P. Sukhoi team with guidance from Tupolev. The prototype flew in 1928. The design was successful and about 400 were manufactured
