She was significantly modernized in the 1920s then again in the 1930s. She was ready for service when WWII began and initially conducted Atlantic Ocean sweeps for German raiders. Provence was at Mers-el-Kebir in June 1940 when the British Royal Navy attacked, fearing that the French ships would be taken over by the Germans. Provence was sunk in the engagement. However she was refloated and moved to Toulon, where she was the flagship of the training fleet. In late 1942 the Germans raced to Toulon in an attempt to take the French Fleet there. The French scuttled the ships, including Provence. She was raised in 1943 and some of her guns were used for coastal defense of that area. The Germans scuttled her again as a harbor blockship in 1944. Ultimately, Provence was raised in April of 1949 and scrapped.
