Suzuya was the third of four vessels in the Mogami class of heavy cruisers in the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was named after the Suzuya River on Karafuto (which today is in Sakhalin, Russia). There was a great deal of modern equipment built into this new class; combined with their high speed of 35 knots and 'Long Lance' torpedoes, they would be formidable foes. However, in 1935 the initial sea trials showed that class leaders Mogami and Mikuma were plagued with technical problems due to the new equipment, welding defects and more. The two ships also proved to be top-heavy with stability problems in any sort of weather or high seas. Both vessels, and their yet-to-be-completed sisters, Kumano and Suzuya underwent a complete and very costly rebuilding program. Once rebuilt, this class with its very high speed, very good armor protection, and heavy armament was among the best in the world during World War II. Suzuya lead an incredibly active and successful career during World War II. She was eventually sunk at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Suzuya was engaging the US Light Carriers when she was struck by aircraft. One hit ignited the torpedoes and the ship had to be abandoned. The wreak of Suzuya has not been found but is one of the deepest wreaks on record, being some 27,000+ feet below the surface.
