This bagged kit is from the late 1970s; the box top was cut out at some point and is included (as shown in the photo). Molded in gloss dark gray (airplane), light green (stand) & blue-tinted clear (propeller disks). Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and instructions. Please note that this kit never had decals; all of the stripes & text (and I do mean all of them) are neatly raised so you can paint them. DIWI was an export/import firm based in East Germany. In the 1970s they re-boxed a large number of models from Soviet and Soviet controlled countries and exported them. This model is from the 'Yunyj Tyechinik' molds and even includes YT instructions. YT succeeded MZMPI (which was the first kit manufacturer in the USSR) and continued till a new name was introduced in the mid 1970s.

The parts are all still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes illustrated instructions. Sevastopol was the first ship completed of the Gangut-class battleships of the Imperial Russian Navy built before World War I. The Ganguts were the first class of Russian dreadnoughts. She was named after the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. She was completed during the winter of 1914–15, but was not ready for combat until mid-1915. Her role was to defend the mouth of the Gulf of Finland against the Germans, who never tried to enter, so she spent her time training and providing cover for minelaying operations. Her crew joined the general mutiny of the Baltic Fleet after the February Revolution and joined the Bolsheviks later that year. She was laid up in 1918 for lack of manpower, but her crew joined the Kronstadt Rebellion of 1921. She was renamed Parizhskaya Kommuna after the rebellion was crushed to commemorate the Paris Commune and to erase the ships 'betrayal' of the Communist Party. She was recommissioned in 1925 and refitted in 1928 in preparation for her transfer to the Black Sea the following year. Parizhskaya Kommuna and the cruiser Profintern ran into a severe storm in the Bay of Biscay that severely damaged Parizhskaya Kommuna's false bow. They had to put into Brest for repairs, but reached Sevastopol in January 1930. Parizhskaya Kommuna was comprehensively reconstructed in two stages during the 1930s that replaced her boilers, upgraded her guns, augmented her anti-aircraft armament, modernized her fire-control systems and gave her anti-torpedo bulges. During World War II she provided gunfire support during the Siege of Sevastopol and related operations until she was withdrawn from combat in April 1942 when the risk from German aerial attack became too great. She was retained on active duty after the war until she became a training ship in 1954. She was broken up in 1956–57.

Seventeen ships were planned but only seven were actually started before the German invasion. Three incomplete ships were destroyed when their building yard in Nikolaev was captured by Nazi Germany and the remaining five cruisers were only completed in 1950.The design was based on the Kirov class cruiser, but with significant changes in armament with 4 triple 152 mm gun turrets replacing 3 triple 180 mm gun turrets. The 152mm B38 guns guns fired a 55 kg shell to 24,000m. The rate of fire was 6 to 7 rounds per minute. The guns were mounted in individual cradles with separate elevation. The secondary armament consisted of 100mm CM-5 guns in twin enclosed powered turrets with a rate of fire of 15-18 rounds per minute. The light AA guns consisted of 37mm weapons. The hull was enlarged protection was improved compared to the Kirov class. The machinery was based on a unit system with alternating boiler rooms and engine rooms. The five ships were completed after the war to a modified design (Project 68K). The aircraft facilities and torpedo tubes were removed and radar and improved anti-aircraft artillery added in teh form of 37mm guns in twin powered and water cooled mountings.
