Still factory sealed with a very short split at the top right long side. Dated 1961. This big 1/16 scale model, along with the other 'Old Timers' represented a significant leap forward in quality for Aurora. It features a rolling chassis build like actual automobile, full suspension, transaxle and driveline, complete exhaust, detailed interior and more. Usually molded in gloss ivory, gloss black and with brass plated parts and real rubber tires. Aurora was renowned for turning a profit and for keeping expenses down. In researching new kit subjects, they came upon a forgotten jewel - the Hudson Miniatures line of 1/16 scale wooden kits. Hudson had discontinued this line due to lack of sales of wooden kits. But the Hudson models were second to none in quality, research and documentation. Aurora was quick to realize this and used the research and layout from these kits to create the subjects for this 'Old Timers' series. It is fortunate for us that they did, because in most cases this is the only injection molded kit of these rare and classic early automobiles.

1958 'Famous Fighters' first and only release. This large 1/48 scale model of this early guided missile is molded in gloss white plastic and includes the booster engine & clear triangle-based display stand. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. The box has wear as shown and hobby shop stamp on the top.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Sealed NM

Still factory sealed and in amazing, investment-grade 'Near Mint' condition. The kit is dated 1958, but this is clearly a later issue as the Aurora logo does not say 'Famous Fighters' in the border and has no sunburst - due to the 130 price extension, it is most likely from 1961 or '62. This was a fine kit for that time and still a favorite 'Classic Builder' today. It features movable rudder, elevators & ailerons, cockpit with pilot, seat, instrument panel, gun sight and feet stirrups, auxiliary gas tank and rotating propeller and wheels. Usually molded in gloss dark green and clear, but I cannot confirm that since it is factory sealed.

Very rare first issue from the early 1950s. When Aurora moved to the West Hempstead plant, they planned a series of very large scale bombers. All kits released up to this time had been small. Aurora's instincts were correct, and the B-26, B-25 and B-29 were a big sales success. This box art was done by Jim Cox and was only used for about one year, making it very rare. The kit has never been started and is inventoried 100% complete with all parts, large clear stand, instructions and decals. The box has great color, four solid corners with no repairs, no creasing, no stains, fading or writing, no cardboard tears or rips, no price tags and no tape beyond the factory sealing tape. There is light general wear and please note that the box displays slightly better than the 'Excellent' grade but it is rated as such because there is light general wear not visible in the photo and a 1.5" x 3/8" factory tape tear on the top long side.

1960 issue hardbox with full artwork; Highway Pioneers prior to this year simply had generic artwork and an ink stamped name on the box ends was the only way to identify the contents. This kit has never been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory bag. Includes instructions. The box would rate slightly higher than 'very good' but there is age foxing on the box side panels. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

1953 early issue molded in green plastic. This is from the issues produced by Gowland & Gowland as it carrier their 'balloon' logo on the side. This kit has never been started. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Very rare, and even rarer in investment-grade 'Near Mint' condition. Tamiya's early armor models were the finest works of the mold maker's art and the very top of that line had push-button remote control and dual electric motor operation. This is one of those kits. The box has great color and gloss, four solid corners and general light wear as the only flaws. It features excellent detail and mold quality, a factory assembled all-metal gear box with dual electric motor drive for realistic differential steering control, all hardware, a factory wired/soldered switch, hand-held remote and working treads that are still 100% intact and flexible. The few larger parts that were never sealed are inventoried complete. With full color painting guide in 'excellent' condition and 'near mint' instructions. In early 1946, USAAF issued requirement for a new attack bomber to succeed the Douglas A-26 Invader. The Martin Company entered the competition and won; the aircraft was given the designation XA-45. Soon later USAAF revised its requirement for better close-support bombing. Martin accepted the new requirement and received a contract for two prototypes; the project was redesignated XB-51. The first XB-51 made its 1st flight on Oct 1949 and became the fastest ground support bomber at that time. In 1950, with the outbreak of the Korean War, the USAF called for a new night intruder bomber. The XB-51 and English Electric Canberra entered in competition. The XB-51 was faster but the Canberra had much better endurance. After a fly-off in 1951, the Canberra was chosen as the winner. In 1952 the XB-51 project was canceled. Although Martin lost the XB-51 order, they received a license to produce the Canberra under designation B-57.
Wood Model Kit, Box Condition: VG+
$135
Formerly released as the Midget Mustang. Scale flying rubber powered wooden model. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowlings, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present
