1965 hardbox issue. The short service life of many Lockheed Electra aircraft posed a problem for Revell; they had invested in the Electra tooling but the kits were no longer selling. Luckily, the Navy took a long term view of the Electra airframe/powerplant combination and saw a superb ASW aircraft. Revell modified the Electra molds to produce this fine small scale Orion kit. Probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s. Higher quality stick-and-tissue flying model to a constant 1/16 scale. Can be built for static scale display or flown with rubber, CO2 or small gas motors for power. Features quality balsa printwood and strip wood, factory-carved balsa propeller (needs final finishing), completely finished wheels and thrust button, hardware, stock wood and metal as required, blocks as needed, covering tissue and beautifully drawn full-size plans. The model has not been started. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. Made by California Model Company out of Long Beach, CA USA. If you have more information on this manufacture, please email me. How far back they go is unknown; they claim to have the 'Know How of 30 Years Experience' on the box side, but that could be interpreted many ways. From the box there was at least a Spad, SE-5, Fokker DVII, Niuport and a Sopwith Camel for rubber power as well as the 'Spacer A-B' & 'Spacer 1/2A' and the indoor Featherette. We know they also issued some ex-Suydam railroad kits as well. From Bill Baker Jr - "California Model Company originated in Long Beach, Calif in the late 1940's or early 1950's. My grandparents, William (Bill) Loyal Baker and his wife, Ruth (Tripp) Baker were the founders. The company started out as primarily balsa based model aircraft but later, in the late 50's or early 60's, branched into the model RR craft kits and Cub Scout craft kits. They even had a balsa speed boat kit powered by a model airplane gas engine adapted to fit. When they retired, around 1968 or 1969, they sold the business and the "shop" in North Long Beach they built to house their business. I have many fond memories as a young child "working" with them in the shop, assembling kits. I have a few unbuilt kits today!"

Still factory sealed. This is the very rare 1950s first issue with the original Airfix logo. The factory header is in 'very good' condition and is still factory stapled shut to the original plastic parts bag. Like most small scale Airfix ships, this one is very nicely molded and features a full hull, display stand, ratlines and more. Measures just over 6 inches in length when built. The Great Western was the first ship specifically built for the Atlantic Ferry Service and was designed by I.K. Brunel (who designed the Great Eastern). When launched in 1837, she carried 120 first class, 20 second class, and beds could be set up for an additional 100 if needed. The crew was 60 men. The first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean was in April of 1838 and took just over 15 days. After crossing the Atlantic 64 times, she ran for 10 years between Southampton and the West Indies before being broken up in 1857.

The Navarin (named after the battle of Navarino) was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Russian Navy.Based on the British Trafalgar-class battleship, she was built by the Galerniy Yard, St. Petersburg, laid down in 1889, launched on 20 October 1891, and completed in 1896.The ship was launched on the 64th anniversary of the battle of Navarino. The ship served as part of the Baltic fleet making a cruise to the Mediterranean Sea in 1896. The Navarin went to the Pacific in 1898 and took part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. She then served in the Baltic Fleet from 1902. On the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war she was sent out with the Second Pacific Squadron. She was sunk at the Battle of Tsushima by three torpedoes fired by Japanese destroyers. Only three sailors were rescued after four days in the water.

The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes instructions. From Dusty Rhodes: This was a remarkable vessel, continuing afloat and in service from immediately after the American Civil War to the time of Kruschev's premiership. This proverbial longevity was commemorated in a Russian postage stamp in 1972. In 1867, Russian naval officers were deeply impressed by USS Miantonomoh (1863) when that vessel visited Kronstadt. Peter Velikiy was Russia's effort to emulate the American ship, with an intent to improve her seakeeping abilities. This kit shows the ship in this as-launched configuration. Much later she was cut down to the berth deck and rebuilt as a heavy cruiser and bore no similarity to the original. Fortunately for Peter, this kept the ship in Russian yards during Russia's war with Japan. She served as a training ship and sub tender in WW I and was in service as a utility hulk from 1921 until some time after 1959.
