Wood Model Kit, Box Condition: Good

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, all hardwood parts (very unusual; normally they were balsa), full color insignia sheet, 3D cut fuselage, profile cut wings and tail feathers, printwood and a small bag of sealed details. The kit has never been started. The parts that were factory sealed are still in the sealed bags. The parts that were not factory sealed have been inventoried complete including insignia and plans/instructions.

Very rare and from 1948. This is a completely prefabricated, balsa and hardwood super-stunt control line design by Leon Shulman. At that time it was capable of doing every possible maneuver that control line models could perform and some that could not be done, such as a loop and vertical 8's. It can literally be built in a few hours and features factory cut and carved, high-quality wooden parts, shaped and hollowed leading edges, tapered training edges, hardware, fully formed wire landing gear (or to be used as a take-off trolley that remained on the runway to improve performance), covering tissue and more. The full size plans include heavily illustrated step-by-step assembly as well as complete flying tips from the famous designer. NOTE: this kit has 'excellent' quality sub assembly as follows: bellcrank to elevator; upper & lower fuselage and hardwood reinforcements assembled. Horizontal stabilizer and elevator are very neatly sanded. There is no other assembly. The model has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and paperwork included. Please note that the covering tissue has bug damage. In 1948 Drone Diesel also produced and marketed the 'Dronette' Sport Flyer & Stunt Trainer and the 'Hot-Rock,' a National Open Stunt Champion in 1947. These model, with the 'Secret Weapon,' promoted 'Diesel At Its Best,' the Drone Diesel Engine with a Class B displacement of .297, bore of 21/32 and Stroke of 7/8". The compression ratio was whopping 18 to 1. A speed control and variable compression head were also available.

From the late 1930s. This is an early issue in the cardboard box with 'Cleveland World Famous Models' printed in silver, which is in unusually good condition. This is a scale flying model in the museum scale of 1/16. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, pre-drilled nose block, fully formed wheels, thrust button & spinner, pre-routed/drilled wheel pants stock, various sizes of metal stock, other balsa stock as required, color insignia, covering material and highest quality plans. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane business- Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's great Recruiter- Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Features all carved and smooth wooden parts, clear plastic canopy, full color decals, glue, sandpaper and special hardwood 'teardrop' shaped display stand. Never started. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - you only had to glue, sand and paint to finish them.

Still factory sealed. This 19 inch wingspan kit is designed for free flight with 'easy conversion to control line or R/C flying.' Includes an innovative system for automatically dropping 'propaganda leaflets' in flight. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they featured color decals, high-grade die cut balsa, vacuform plastic detail parts, plastic wheels (if required), finished wire landing gear, rubber motor and plastic prop, full size plans with instruction details and full instructions for conversion to RC or control line.

Rare model from 1943 for the advanced collector. Hawk was one of the few manufacturers making wooden kits to a constant scale of 1/48. This model features 3D (three-axis) cut fuselage, profile (2D) cut wings and tail feathers, plastic three blade propeller with the correct large spinner, fully finished wooden wheels, sandpaper, complete water-slide decal sheet, and an amazing full-color 3 view plan with templates, exploded drawing, scale, airfoil sections and more. These plans are in 'Excellent++' condition. There is also a large fold out of text and step-by-step illustrated instructions. Even includes the original factory packing tissue paper. This model comes from the personal collection of one of Monogram's top Chief Designers. He designed and headed up the projects for the B-52, B-17, B-24J, Mosquito, Skyraider A-1E, Hurricane, Spitfire, P-40, at least one (if not all) of the 1/8 scale cars and many, many more. The kit is a 1950s/early 1960s stick-and-tissue flying model which features quality balsa printwood, strip stock, formed wheels, covering material and full plans. The kit has never been started and is complete. The entire Comet 1950s "N" line included the following (gaps mean there is no kit): N1 Tiger Shark P-40, N2 F-86D Sabre Jet, N4 Globe Swift, N6 Taylorcraft, N8 F-51 Mustang, N9 Helicopter, N11 Ryan Navion, N12 Firefly, N15 Piper Cub, N16 Fokker DVII, N17 Spad, N24 Phantom Fury, N25 Aeronca K (floats) and N26 Stinson SR-7. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Very rare and from the mid 1930s to the early 1940s. This is a Cleveland 'D' or dwarf kit. The term 'Dwarf' is just a bit deceptive, as it is Cleveland's designation for 1/24 scale. Most Cleveland kits were designated 'SF' or Scale Flying - 1/16 scale. The Dwarf kits were needed to fill a market demand for smaller flying models. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and Dwarfs were no exception, containing very high quality balsa printwood, stringers & spars, fully formed wheels, covering tissue, a wood propeller that is about 90% carved and just needs final sanding, gray rigging thread (if required), metal and balsa stock as required and more. With Cleveland's famous high-quality plans. While the box has significant wear, the kit inside is still 'factory tissue sealed.' When the Cleveland workers packed each kit, they wrapped them in tissue that effectively made a seal which has not been disturbed. Whoever buys it will be the first one to see the contents since it was packed in the factory over 90 years ago.
