The P-77 had an estimated top speed of 410 mph with two 20mm cannons and two .50 caliber machine guns but weighed only 3,700 lbs due to wood construction. Production of 25 aircraft was authorized on May 16, 1942, but lack of superchargers reduced this order to 6. By the time the aircraft flew on April 1, 1944, the shortage of light metals had never been a major issue and other types offered superior performance.
