Hawk was a manufacturer of 1/48 constant scale solid wooden models back in the 1920s (well before plastic), but they jumped on the plastic band wagon very early. Hawk Grumman Panther F9F - Flip Box 1st Issue, 1/48, 400

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

Sold

Very early rare Hawk kit. Hawk was active in manufacturing wooden kits in the 1920s and wooden kits with some injection molded details in the late 1930s before all-injection molded kits came around. Two of Hawks early plastic kits were the F9F and F-90 in the flip top box. Oddly, the kits are more famous for the fact that Aurora purchased the F9F and F-90 models and back engineered them to create their first two plastic kits molds. Correctly molded in a beautiful medium blue with clear stand, stand arm, nose probe and canopy and olive drab pilot. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Eadie from a Kingfisher squadron based in the Ellice Islands. He spotted and rescued Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker and his companions after they had been on a raft in the Pacific for 21 days and virtually given up for lost. Lt. Eadie moved the most injured into the radio compartment while Rickenbacker and the other crew member were lashed to the wings. Eadie figured that the aircraft could not fly, and luckily he met a PT boat and transfered the uninjured men to it.

Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they had the action features and were much nicer than most other kits of this type.

Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond.
