SNAP Combat Jeep And Trailer - With 3 GIs - (ex Revell), 1/40, 148-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$119

Rare model from the original 1950s Revell "S" Issue molds. Very well detailed featuring rotating wheels, radio, jerry cans, detailed chassis and suspension, tilting windshield, driver/soldier and general figure, detachable trailer with rotating wheels, generator, cable reel, packs, tool box and more. Molded in olive drab plastic. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in 1955 or 1956, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Adams never issued the kit. The famous HO model train manufacturer Athearn purchased the Adams molds and ended up with the jeep. Ahtearn used the name SNAP for all plastic kit releases and slightly modified the molds by adding their name & logo to a part (or two) of each kit. Then UPC (Universal Power Master) either leased or purchased (probably the former) the Adams molds from SNAP in the 1960s. While most UPC kits say 'Made in Japan' the ex-Adams models do not and say 'Made in USA'. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk purchase of molds from Athearn since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

As a result the decals are only 'fair.' Most of the damage is between the transfers, but there is some damage on some of the smaller decals also. There is certainly enough there to make a new sheet using the instructions located on this website on how to save and reproduce old decals. The large foldout color guide is damaged on the front 1/2 as well.

Revell SMS Seeadler With 'S' Glue - German WWI Commerce Raider - (Sea Eagle), 1/232, H382-298

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

$225

Rare 1960 hardbox first issue and ever rarer in this condition. The 'Excellent++' condition box features great framable John Steel artwork. Inside, it even contains a factory-wrapped very colorful metal tube of 'S' glue as well as a history of the Seeadler, a message from Count Luckner, a map of the journey and locations & names of all the ships sunk by the raider. This is a kit of a fantastic subject, the famous WWI sailing commerce raider of Count Felix Von Luckner. It is a very well detailed model for that time and has a full hull, display stand, detailed deck houses and deck fittings, davits and ship's boats, guns, fife rails, preformed rat lines, rigging material, rigging instructions and much more. Molded in gray, brown & black plastic. Never started. It has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and includes the flag sheet and instructions. The SMS Seeadler was a unique WWI raider in that it was not designed to elude the British blockade and break out to sea...it was designed to pass right through the blockade within full view of the British before attacking allied shipping around the world. No detail was overlooked in the Seeadler's preparation, right down to a Norwegian-speaking crew. The plan went perfectly - and the Seeadler passed inspection at the British Blockade. Her non-threatening appearance helped her in an active and colorful raiding career that nearly went around the world. I highly recommend reading any of several books that you can find about this ship. Von Luckner himself became quite a celebrity for his exciting exploits.

Nicely molded. High quality Frog kit with unsightly rivets, just fine panel lines for a realistic model. Features basic cockpit and crew stations, crew figures, separately molded ailerons, elevators and rudder. This kit has never been started. It is inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.
