Comet Piper Cub J-3 - 25.5 inch Wingspan Gas or Rubber Powered Wooden Aircraft (J3), 1623-250

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

From the early to mid 1970s. Large scale issue for rubber or gas free flight, or easily converted to RC using today's tiny and light servos and receivers. Box art is by Locher, who did a great deal of the Monogram box artwork also. Kit features traditional wood/tissue construction with all die cut parts, 'Tube-O-Matic' fuselage construction and 'Rugged Super X Simplified Non-Warping Wing' construction, colorful insignia sheet for civil or US Army versions, detailed full size plans with building instructions, die-cut printwood, factory-cut stripwood with leading and trailing wing edges, fully formed and finished wooden main and tail wheels & thrust button, hardware, tissue and plastic propeller. Never started and inventoried complete, but NOTE: all die-cut parts have been very neatly (adult) removed from the sheetwood. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Sold

Scale kit for RC, free flight or control line. Features large, full color decal sheet, high-grade die cut balsa, die cut plywood, vacuform plastic cowl with engine detail, wheel pants and pilot, clear canopy material, carved and painted wood main and tail wheels, finished wire landing gear, rubber motor and plastic prop, carved wooden thrust button, control line handle, firewall, elevator horn platform, metal hardware and pushrod wire, full size plans with instruction details and full instructions for conversion to RC or control line. The model has not been started. The small parts are still factory sealed; the parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete and includes plans and decals. There is no assembly but NOTE: two sheets of parts are punched out to 'near mint' quality. The box is only grade 'fair+' because there is a closed tear at the center of the top wing. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I personally considered Sterlings to be 'deluxe' kits.

Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Burns Guide to plastic models only listed one historic sailing vessel by Ikko: the sailing 'Battleship of Shogunate Hideyoshi Toyotomi.' However, I assume that Japanese modelers have known all along. As a matter of fact, this box lists Hideyoshi and Yamada's ships as part of a series of kits of historic Japanese ships. Ikko ended production in the late 1960s.

She was significantly modernized in the 1920s then again in the 1930s. She was ready for service when WWII began and initially conducted Atlantic Ocean sweeps for German raiders. Provence was at Mers-el-Kebir in June 1940 when the British Royal Navy attacked, fearing that the French ships would be taken over by the Germans. Provence was sunk in the engagement. However she was refloated and moved to Toulon, where she was the flagship of the training fleet. In late 1942 the Germans raced to Toulon in an attempt to take the French Fleet there. The French scuttled the ships, including Provence. She was raised in 1943 and some of her guns were used for coastal defense of that area. The Germans scuttled her again as a harbor blockship in 1944. Ultimately, Provence was raised in April of 1949 and scrapped.

Mirko Mir CSS H.L. Hunley - World's First Successful Submarine, 1/35, 35-013

Large-scale kit of this excellent subject. Full hull model features fine moldings and very good detail, injection molded parts, photoetched brass details, bow 'torpedo', display stand and color painting guide. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes instructions. Hunley was privately built in 1863 by Park and Lyons of Mobile, Alabama. The world's first successful submarine was fashioned from a cylindrical iron steam boiler, which was deepened and lengthened by the addition of tapered ends. Power was by 8 to turn the hand-cranked propeller while the 9th crew member worked the rudder. The ballast tanks could be flooded by valves and pumped out by hand. Extra ballast was through iron weights bolted to the underside of the hull; in the event of emergency surfacing, these could be removed by unscrewing the bolts from inside the vessel (nothing was mentioned about how the submarine may flood if you did this). On February 17, 1864, the crew of the Hunley made a daring late night attack on USS Housatonic in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Hunley rammed the Housatonic and embedded her bow-mounted spar torpedo into the hull. The torpedo was detonated by a long rope, so after leaving the warhead, the Hunley's crew backed away. The torpedo did explode, sinking the Housatonic. However, the blast sank the Hunley also. The submarine was finally found in 1995 and is now a museum ship in South Carolina.

Monogram B-26 Invader - Four Star Issue / True Second Issue, 1/67, P6-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

True second issue from 1955. Rare. Few people (including me) knew that there was a second release of P6-98 that varied significantly from the first issue. The true first issue has a part number of 'P6-98', early '4 star' rectangle logo, black rubber main gear tires and no support peg to keep it from being a 'tail sitter' when assembled. The second issue (this kit) has the same part number, logo but has regular injection molded (silver) tires and a peg to keep the nose gear grounded. The instructions show these changes are are numbered P6, as are the decals. Molded in correct gloss silver and clear plastic. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. (In the past it was believed that the second issue was 'PA6-98' with a modified box top logo. This is now known to be the third issue. Please note that the box is only 'good' with significant wear and closed tear on the lower long side.
