Wright-Dayton Co Grumman F4F -3 Wildcat Plywright Solid, 1/48, PW-1

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$75

Very rare. From the very early 1940s. Wright-Dayton was located at Front & Second Strs, Dayton Ohio. The instructions state that this flying glider was 'designed by the chief engineer of the Wright-Dayton Company, who helped built and fly the original Wright Airplane." No small claim and not an idle one! Upon further investigation, the un-named chief engineer is James M.H. Jacobs. He filed the patent for this glider in 1937; he is also named in patents with Wilber Wright. Sure enough, he was an engineer who certainly worked closely with the Wright Brothers. This is a very nice, true-scale, deluxe (for the time) solid wood model of bread-and butter construction. Features 9 excellent, factory cut hardwood profiles for the bread-and-butter fuselage with dowel pin alignment, templates (on the instructions) for final sanding, very nice profile cut hardwood wings, horizontal and vertical stabilizers, die cut hardwood display stand, a factory sealed envelope of small parts, an excellent color insignia sheets with starts, wing walks, retracted wheels and gear doors, oil coolers, canopy with frames, tail wheel, side windows and stand name plate and excellent full size instructions with detail assembly drawings and excellent step-by-step instructions. Never started and complete with all parts and paperwork.

Wright-Dayton Co Wright Aerial Torpedo Flying Balsawood Glider

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$42

Rare. Exact date is unknown, but is from the late 1930s or early 1940s. This is a rubber-band launched folding wing type model - when it slowed down near peak altitude, the wings would deploy and results in a long glide. It comes with a balsa body, factory attached red, white and blue tail feathers, metal nose weight (preinstalled) that has a launch hook, two balsa wings with excellent red printed design that says 'Wright Aerial Torpedo', factory applied tin folding tabs on the inboard wings, a rubber band/launch hardwood stick, full instructions and even the rubber bad (no good, but present, stuck to instructions). Complete and never used.

Saunders Swadar 1914 Mercedes Race Car - Classics of Road and Track, 1/16, 1914-K

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$95

Very rare and from the early/mid 1950s. Although simple by modern standards, this model was a big increase in quality from the toy-like Highway Pioneers...not to mention the big 1/16 scale (HP were 1/32). Features an engine, removable hood, rolling chassis and interior, but all with a low part count. Very nicely molded in gloss white and black. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes 'excellent' instructions and even the remains of the factory 'krinkle' bag that the parts were formerly sealed in. Sanders Swadar was a toy company out of Aurora, Illinois and a division of Saunders Tool & Die Company in the same town. Saunders decided to go into the plastic model business some time in the early 1950s, no doubt inspired by the Highway Pioneers and the rush to market that followed that. Other 'construction kit' listed on the instructions at the time of this release are Bell Helicopter with Pontoons, Bell Helicopter with Landing Skids, USN Tandem Rotor Helicopter, USN Aircraft Carrier with Catapult and Planes (CV38), Fairchild Pack Plane with Tank and Jeep and 1/16 1912 Mercer Race Car. Please note that other than the Mercer, the other models have a toy-like quality to them...so this is a very early release as the other true-scale Swadar models had yet to be released. Actually, very few kits appeared with the full 'Saunders Swader' name - most simply said 'Swadar.' In total there was a small but significant line of aircraft and a few large (1/16) scale car kits as well as a famous tractor model. Most or all of these kits were available until the mid 1950s, when Swadar discontinued production. At some point Lindberg acquired these molds although it does not appear to have been in the 1950s or even the 1960s. The earliest Lindberg releases appear to be 1977 - so until older issues show up, we can speculate on where the molds were until then and how Lindberg obtained them!

This is Sir Francis Drake's English galleon that is famous for its circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580. The ship was originally named Pelican, but Drake re-named her in mid-voyage 1577 just before entering the Strait of Magellan. The name 'Golden Hind' was a compliment to his patron of the voyage, Sir Christopher Hatton. Hatton's family coat of arms was a golden female deer ('hind').
