From Stephen Payne: "Helicopter 66/Helo 66," or US Navy Bureau Number 152711, is easily one of the most well-known &widely-recognized Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King helicopters in history. It was the prime recovery helicopter for five of the Apollo missions. It servedwith the Navy's Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 4 (HS-4) with distinction. From late 1968 through the spring of 1970, the Black Knights of HS-4 participated in and pioneered techniques for the Apollo capsule recoveries. HS-4 was on scene for Apollo missions 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13. The helicopter's flight number was changed from '66' to '740' after the Apollo 11 recovery as the U.S. Navy had switched to a three number squadrondesignator system - but the helicopter was repainted with the number "66" for each recovery (Apollo 12 & 13) thereafter for public relations reasons.

In the late 1960s Aurora realized that the older molds were out of date and modelers were demanding more realism. They made a new set of molds for ships, airplanes and helicopters. These were significant improvements as the new molds were on par with current offerings. This Cobra kit is one of the improved models. Aurora The Silver Knight of Augsberg, 1/8, 471

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

Sold

Aurora of England issue most likely from the late mid to late 1960s. Classic and very popular Aurora knight kit from the original molds. Large 1/8 scale model is molded gloss silver and includes the yellow plume in surprisingly excellent condition. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried and NOTE: missing the two smallest parts, #38 (Visor Hook) and #3 (Plume holder). Each can be made. Otherwise includes all other parts, plume and instructions. The Knight kits have a fascinating history. In the mid 1950s, Aurora bought three 'Knight' molds from Crown Plastics and issued them as K1, K2 and K3. These were the very first Aurora figure kits and they sported the 1956-only rectangular 'Northern Lights' logo with the correct 'Crown Line' logo inside it. The sales success of the Knight prompted Aurora to launch an entire line of figure kits. The knights themselves stayed in production long after many other figures were discontinued.

The Rotodyne flew at up to 191 MPH with a range of 450 miles and a payload of 48 passengers or 5 tons of freight. Despite the excellent performance and a larger design in the works, the RAF never placed an order and BEA never placed a firm order. The project was discontinued in 1962.

UPC Phantom II - McDonnell F4H-1 (F-4C) - USAF or US Navy, 1/50, 5090-300

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

This kit represents somewhat of a mystery. We know that UPC did not make any of their own tooling, but the mold origin of this kit are unknown. In an apparent cost saving measure, the large box re-uses the same Scott Edison box art from the smaller-scale UPC F-4 which is an ex-Hasegawa kit. The dramatic box art claims this is a F-4C; however, the instructions state that it is an F-4H-1. Since they are a copy of the original manufacturers instructions, I believe the instructions. The kit is interesting for it's level of detail. It includes the fuselage fuel tanks and two detailed engines. The cockpit includes ejection seats, two pilots, side instrument panels, control stick, main panels and opening canopies. Rudders, ailerons, flaps and elevators all move and the wings fold as well. There are internal wing fuel tanks. The landing gear retracts and all gear doors close also. The nose can be removed to display a detailed radar package. A wide choice of wing and fuselage loadouts is provided, with numerous AIM-7 Sparrow missiles (body mounted and on wing pylons), iron bombs and a centerline drop tank. There is one large decal sheet with two decal choices: FJ-199 USAF as shown on the box art and a US Navy aircraft from VF-102 USS Enterprise. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions.

UPC F-104G Super Starfighter - USAF, 1/50, 5053-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Large scale F-104 that is full of operating features. The mold originated in Japan but the manufacture is not known; if you can help, please email me. Scott Eidson, who did the famous artwork for Revell, did many UPC box covers including this one. The model features moving rudder and ailerons, pilot figure, retractable main and nose landing gear with opening and closing gear doors, detailed removable jet engine and detailed afterburner, removable aft fuselage section, opening and closing speed brakes, tip tanks and Sidewinder AIM-9 missiles. The kit has never been started. One parts bag is still factory sealed; the other bag was open so I inventoried those parts and they complete. Includes decals for the USAF ONLY and instructions. The instructions say it only come with Luftwaffe or JSDF decals, but some versions (like this one) were sold with USAF decals only.
