Please NOTE that the free knife advertised on the box top is not present. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Revell DC-7 Flagship American Airlines One-Piece Stand Arm Pre-S Issue, 1/122, H219-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Rare, true first issue dated 1955 with the correct Pre-S fantastic artwork of a DC-7 at the moment just before touchdown. Please note, this is the correct first release with the one-piece plastic stand arm and instructions that illustrate this. There is even a rarer factory rubber stamp on the instructions to correct step one! Also, the main gear axles are separate parts on this issue. On the second issues the gear struts were modified and the axles were moved to the wheels, and the stand arm was changed to two plastic parts because the one-piece stand arm was fragile and in use it broke easily. Very few were made as Revell quickly corrected this weakness. Correctly molded in gloss silver and clear and a large, colorful decal sheet. Inside, the kit has never been started. Inside, the kit is exactly as it left the factory with all small parts still factory sealed in the 'krinkle' clear bag and the larger parts not sealed and inventoried complete. Instructions are 'excellent' with the detailed American Airlines route map on the back. Decals are 'excellent' also and flat with no curl and light yellowing. The box has a tear as shown, clear tape on the long sides and general wear as shown. All four corners are solid and original and the color and gloss are excellent.

Here sisterships included USS Neosho (lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942), SS Markay (which became the USS Suwanee), Esso New Orleans and more. Esso Trenton was a twin-screw vessel (which this model accurately depicts) with a deadweight of 18,300 tons capacity and a draft of just over 31 feet. She had a length of 525 feet, beam of 75 feet and a draft of 39 feet. Her original cargo capacity was 146,024 barrels of oil with a pumping rate of 8,000 barrels and house. Her turbine engines, supplied with steam by four water-tube boilers, drove this large ship at 18 knots average speed. Esso Trenton served Esso only from delivery on December 14, 1939 till take-over by the government on October 22, 1940. During this time she had a very active career. But the US Navy had greater plans that oil for the Esso Trenton; she was converted to the aircraft carrier USS Sangamon. This ship and crew had an incredibly active service life and became very famous.
