Rogers Motor Company M-4 Sherman US Army Medium Tank, 1/16, T-295

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Very Rare. From 1944 or 1945. Very large, full scale kit over 14 inches long that represented the state-of-the-art in model kits at that time. Has over 780 finished parts. No carving. Features precision machined hardwood hull and turret parts, accurately cut out parts, turned, finished and die cut trim parts, revolving turret, realistic moving treads, finished turnings, 22 finished bogie and slack wheels, materials for cable, axles, lift hooks, etc., very thick (thicker than many woods) die-cut heavy cardstock parts (mainly for the treads), sandpaper, US Army Olive Drab paint and more. Includes superb, full size plans with elevation drawings, very detailed text instructions and numerous detail drawings keyed to the assembly steps. The kit has never been started. Inside, it is just as it left the factory. The small parts are still factory sealed in two paper bags. The other parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete including paint and plans in 'excellent++' condition. Rogers was an early producer of miniature gas engines for free-flight and early radio control model kits and often had large adds for these engines in hobby magazines. The full company name on the box is listed as 'Rogers Motor Company Detroit Michigan' and the 'Scale Model Division' is listed as Tawas City, Michigan. Right at the end of WWII, Rogers made a very short journey into kit manufacturing. As you would expect from an engine manufacture, the kits were all true scale, highly prefabricated, had excellent detail and were fairly complicated. Rogers produced at least four kits - the 40MM AA Gun and Carriage (1/16 scale), Army Weasel, LST and an amazing huge scale M4 Sherman tank with over 780 parts. These kits were likely produced in that order, with the LST being released around late 1945/early 1946. I have seen several of these kits built and they make excellent displays. And thanks to kit builder and collector Fran Fierko for some new and important kit history! Fran was able to track down the son of the designer of the five Rogers kits. Mr. John Hoenle Jr. was a master model builder who received a deferment from the draft in WWII to build recognition models for the military- some of which may still be on display at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. Mr. Hoenle is believed to have designed one other early kit, a civilian Chris Craft cabin cruiser. It is unknown if this kit was issued or not. Mr. Hoenle left Rogers to design promo models for Jo-Han, which is famous for their 1950s line of car kits.

The Hawk P-36A has the dubious distinction of fighting on both sides and for more countries than any other plane in history during the opening years of WWII. This Hawk, one in a long progression of famous fighter aircraft, was the winner of a 1935 competition. The USAA Corps received the first aircraft in April of 1938 and the French ordered 100 aircraft in May of the same year. French Hawks shot down just over 30 German planes during the battle for France. The Germans captured the aircraft and sold them to Finland. Others were captured when the Germans overran Norway. In all over 800 Hawks were produced and served in China, Netherlands East Indies, Portugal, Great Britain, Thailand, Argentina and Peru. Although an excellent fighter in 1935, the Hawk was outclassed by the time the war started but when flown properly still gave a good account of itself.

Since the USSR did not have a definitive heavy bomber doctrine, only between 81 and 93 were built, but they lead active service lives. In use, the PE-8s performance matched Western Heavy Bombers designed during the same time. In August of 1941, PE-8s bombed Berlin. They were used to attack long range targets in German-held Eastern Europe, as well as for tactical support during the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk. It was a PE-8 that flew over German airspace between May 19th and June 13th in 1942 to deliver USSR Foreign Minister Molotov and his delegation from Moscow to London and then to Washington DC and back for talks on grand strategy against Nazi Germany. As a testament to the soundness of the design, PE-8s remained in service till the 1950s, even after the Tu-4 was available.
