Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc

Features quality die-cut balsa sheetwood, stripwood and spars, plastic nose cowl and engine top, full decals, scale wheels, rubber motor, plastic propeller, metal prop shaft and stock, die-cut plywood parts for gas engine conversion, covering tissue and excellent full size plans. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

From Stephen Payne: "Helicopter 66/Helo 66," or US Navy Bureau Number 152711, is easily one of the most well-known &widely-recognized Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King helicopters in history. It was the prime recovery helicopter for five of the Apollo missions. It servedwith the Navy's Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 4 (HS-4) with distinction. From late 1968 through the spring of 1970, the Black Knights of HS-4 participated in and pioneered techniques for the Apollo capsule recoveries. HS-4 was on scene for Apollo missions 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13. The helicopter's flight number was changed from '66' to '740' after the Apollo 11 recovery as the U.S. Navy had switched to a three number squadrondesignator system - but the helicopter was repainted with the number "66" for each recovery (Apollo 12 & 13) thereafter for public relations reasons.

Sold

Rare. Purchased new on April 1, 1966 at Franks Model Shop in Cleveland, Ohio. The box copyright is dated 1960. This kit is from the large 'Bild'n Fly' series. This series was Monogram's most elaborate, colorful and realistic flying models. It was short-lived however, as by 1960 static (non-flying) plastic kits had become the #1 hobby of boys in the USA. The Bild'n Fly series included simplified assembly - no ribs or stringers. All balsa parts are color laminated and die cut - no tissue covering and all decoration is built in full color. There are 14 highly detailed plastic parts such as cowl, wheels, prop, oil cooler, etc. The windows are clear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions.

Never started and inventoried complete. Carl Goldberg was a gifted designer of model aircraft, and his career spanned the evolution of flying models. His designs and number of titles won in competition at the Nationals is legendary. His first competition was the 1928 Nationals, where he received honorable mention. By 1934 he won the indoor Nats and in 1935 he opened a Hobby Shop, among the first in the nation (the first one was probably opened by Cleveland Models Ed Packard). Awards came quickly. He wrote articles for Model Airplane News, and was Comet's top designer from 1939 till 1945. After Comet, he worked with Mike Schlesinger and Sid Axelrod on what eventually became Top-Flite Models. In 1955 he founded Carl Goldberg Models and released a still-popular line of scale, rubber, gas, glider and RC models. Needless to say, Goldberg's models are of the highest quality.
