Guillows Nieuport 11 - 24 inch Wingspan for Free Flight or R/C Conversion, 203

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$32

Purchased new on May 2, 1966 at Uncle Bob's Hobby Shop in Cleveland, Ohio. Large scale, well detailed kit. Can be flown rubber free flight, gas free flight, or converted to electric RC using modern small, light servos and receivers. Features quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, stripwood and sparts, die-cut plywood firewall for gas operation, light plastic cowl, pilot bust, machine guns, engine and more, scale plastic wheels, rubber motor, thrust button, plastic propeller, big sheet of full color decals, covering tissue and excellent full size plans with instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

On February 7, 1943, Growler was patrolling on the surface in the Pacific when an enemy vessel was spotted close aboard. The enemy changed course to ram, but Gilmore torpedoed her, leaving her crippled in the water. However, the ship opened fire with .60 caliber machine gun fire from close range, mortally wounding Commander Gilmore. His dying words were 'Take her down'. He remained on the bridge while the sub crash-dove to safety. For this he received the Navy Cross, Gold Star, and was recommended for a posthumous Medal of Honor.

Ace Whitman USS Seadragon SS194 Submarine (Sargo Class) - Balsa Ship Model Kit, 1/169, 2994

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$79

Rare, large scale 22 inch long hollow display model likely from the 1940s. It builds up with hull bulkheads and stringers and is intended to be tissue or silk covered, although it would be much wiser to either cover it with thin balsa or plank it like a plank-on-frame ship model. The photos (on the back of the box and on the plans) of the built model are impressive and realistic; no doubt, you can make an incredible, almost one-of-kind kit from it. However, there is a great deal of scratch building expected, which is typical of kits from that time. It is certainly not recommended for beginners. The builder should be highly experienced with stick and tissue methods and scratchbuilding fittings and more.

In September of 1942, Warrant Officer Fujita took off in his Glen from I-25 and became the only aircraft to ever bomb the continental United States when he dropped phosphorus bombs in two attacks on the Oregon coast. Decals for both of these aircraft are included. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions.
