William H Low Co La France Aerial Ladder New York Fire Department Truck Circa 1900 - Wilo Line Fire Truck, 1/24, FL10

Multimedia Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very, very rare and the flagship kit of the line. Likely from the 1940s. William H Low Co., of Braintree Mass., issued the 'Wilo Line' which included a superb series of antique commercial firefighting equipment. The scale is given as 1/2" and the finished wagon is over 14 inches long with the ladders, and even bigger with the 6" front carriage bar. The kits were very advanced for the time and shared many of the pre-fabrication methods of Hudson Miniatures. This kit is based on the La France prototype made for the NYFD around 1900. Please note this is a full operating model and not for the faint of heart! Features plastic injection molded spoke wheels, precut large hardwood parts, fully formed hardwood ladder frames that are drilled for the pre-cut ladder rungs, extinguishers, lanterns and much more, two clear factory-sealed small parts bags including a great many fully cut or carved wood ones, metal parts and even plastic parts. Also includes brass screen material metal stock, complete instructions with detailed plans and full text step-by-step guide, painting notes and even a photo of the actual prototype. The kit has never been started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed bags. The parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete including instructions/plans. The kits in this line include CH110 Combination Hose Wagon, FC15 Chemical and Reel Carts, F16 Horses in the same scale, CL120 Hook And Ladder, CL120 (again) City Service Ladder (a completely different kit from the previous one), FC180 Combination Chemical Wagon, FH130 Hose Wagon, FP7 Amoskeag Steamer, CR110 Service Hose Reel, FL10 Aerial Ladder, F18 Chemical Engine and more. In most cases they are the only kits in existence of these historic vehicles. Bill Low did design at least one 'non-fire truck' kit in his Will-O-Line - a Conestoga Wagon, advertised as being 1/24 scale, kit #B14 for $2.85 list as "This is another Museum Piece by Bill Low." After seeing these fire truck kits, I do not doubt that.

Cleveland Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk - Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-77

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
