Varney US Navy Fleet Submarine, 1/240

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

$1100

This model is a landmark in the history of Plastic Kits. The Varney Fleet Sub is the primary candidate for the first all-plastic ship kit made in the USA. The famous HO/O train manufacture, Varney, branched out into other scale model kits at the end of WWII. In late 1945, they introduced what are thought to be the first USA produced plastic model kits - the Fleet Sub and the PT-17 Stearman. Both kits were excellent scale models given the state of modeling at that time. However, Varney was 6 years too early. The Fleet Sub and PT-17 met a cool reception when it was introduced to retailers. Hobby Shops were not sure if it would sell, and did not know how to sell it. Consequently, most retailers would not order it and those who did put them where they were not seen by the public. Distributors stopped carry the kits due to a lack of reporders. The result was inevitable - they did not sell, and Varney pulled both kits from production very quickly. Varney was committed to cutting the molds on the LST and it was released in 1946 with the same result. That marked the end of Varney's venture into non-train scale plastic models. Varney dedicated all production to HO trains and in the late 1940s they sold the molds for the Fleet Sub, the LST and the PT-17 to O-Lin. The molds underwent modification (the hull was divided into two parts instead of one) and were released by O-Lin and Lindberg. This kit is a superb, investment-grade "excellent++" example. The box top has like-new color and gloss, four solid corners with no repairs, no tape or price tags, no marks from tape or tags and no tears or other litho damage. Flaws include very light and even edge wear (as shown), very slight 'dishing' inward and very light foxing on two box sides. Inside, the kit is still as it came from the factory. The yellow parts display is 'very good++' and the only flaw is the scuffing as shown. The small parts bag is still factory sealed and factory stapled to the yellow display. The glass display stand arm is tucked into its holder. The heavy one-piece molded hull is beautiful and in rare crack-free condition and cradled into the holder. The base was factory glued to the yellow display but has come loose. It also includes the unused factory tube of Testors cement in its own holder. Very large instruction sheet is near mint and folds out to illustrate construction and offers numerous display ideas for this new medium in hobby kits. Decals were not provided with the kit. This kit was made with gray injection molded details, glass stand arm and black injection molded stand and sub hull. I have seen versions with no paint on the base and hull; however, this one has the base and hull factory painted gray. The paint is in 'near mint' condition on the hull and 'excellent' on the stand base. A rare example of a classic kit. Shipped with insurance only.

Billing Boats Hoga YT146 Pearl Harbor Tug - (Tugboat), 1/50, 708

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

$189

Big scale plank-on-frame kit measures 62cm long when assembled. Highly detailed and features laser-cut parts, quality stripwood, full fittings (metal and plastic), rigging material, full size plans and detailed instructions. The kit has never been started. This tug boat was approved by the American navy on 22 May 1941 and given the name "YT146 HOGA". It was then posted with the 14th navy station at Pearl Harbor. After only six months in service, the HOGA was put to a far greater test than had been expected, when Pearl Harbor was attacked on 7 December 194l. The HOGA fought without break for 48 hours, extinguishing fires, tugging bombed warships and rescuing seamen. Today the HOGA is the only vessel still in existence from the time of the Japanese attack.

Mamoli Halifax English Colonial Schooner 1774, 1/54

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$165

Very highly detailed plank-on-frame model that measures 59cm when built. This is a superb kit featuring numerous factory cut wooden parts, numerous die-cut hard and plywood parts, high quality stripwood, a large and very complete fittings pack, sailcloth, printed cloth flags, full size plan sheet with complete rigging details and more. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes plans/instructions. The Halifax was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1768 and transformed at Portsmouth into a typical colonial schooner of that time. She saw service along the American coasts in a rather complex period the history of this country.

Dumas Essex Class Aircraft Carrier 36 Inches Long, 1/290

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$295

Very, very rare kit from 1945. This is the only one I have ever seen or heard of. Dumas advertised this kit as 'A beautiful 36" model as accurate as possible under war conditions' and that was no idle boast. By all appearances it was the most detailed US aircraft carrier model ever made to that date. Features hollow construction, airwing, factory marked bulkhead balsa blocks, high quality balsa printwood, other wood as required, metal stock, rigging material, sandpaper, an unopened can of 'Delicate Gray' Gloss Enamel (with a 'Four Hour Drying Time") and a glass bottle of glue. Amazingly, the glue and paint area still both a liquid and not dried up. Comes with text instructions and plans. The two very large sheets of plans were drawn by Al Dumas Jr. They include full side and top elevation views, sectional views and a large number of detail drawings for AA guns, aircraft construction and much more. There is light bug damage to one side of one sheet but it is minor. The kit has not been started. The contents are mint - you will be the first to remove them from the box. They are still factory packed with factory packing paper. Dumas says inside this is an Essex-Class carrier, but due to wartime censorship and the initial secrecy surrounding the Essex class, the kit is not a perfect Essex. When more information became available after the war, this may have been why the model was discontinued so soon.

West-Craft Super Scout Car US Army, 1/24, S-3

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

$89

From the mid 1940s. Very rare with fantastic box art by Bill Neebe. West-Craft box art was amazing at a time when most box art was minimal and/or uninspiring. It was well ahead of its time and certainly predated all plastic kit box art in the USA. This was an excellent and highly detailed model for that time and measures 11 inches long when assembled. Features numerous factory cut hardwood parts, numerous die-cut hardwood parts, die-cut heavy cardstock parts, completely formed and finished wheels with center lugs and tread, full decals, a glass bottle of paint (intact but dried), decals and some of the best early wood kit instructions I have seen. They include 38 detailed text steps, parts identification drawings and four superb elevation drawings. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The box mentions cement, but I do not see any.

Italeri Waco CG-4A Assault Glider or British Hadrian D-Day Invasion Glider, 1/72, 118

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+

$38

Still factory sealed. Same as the Testors kit as Italeri made and owns the molds. The Waco CG-4 was designed and initially built by Waco Aircraft Company of Troy, OH. It first saw action in Sicily and the operation was termed a disaster. This likely had more to do with planning than the actual glider. Missions in Europe, including D-Day, went much better. The glider was even deployed to Burma. It could carry up to 13 troops, or a jeep and four men, or a 75mm Field Gun.
