Rare ship model from 1930s that contains Ideal's revolutionary 'Premolded Hull.' Since carving the hull was by far the most difficult part of early ship modeling, Ideal created a thick-walled, completely formed, hollow hull made from a wood composite. Never started. Inside, the kit is exactly as it left the factory which means that all the parts are still 'factory tissue sealed.' As was the custom back then, workers would assembly the parts for a kit and wrap them in tissue paper in a unique way that ensured that all the parts would be 'sealed' and held in place. Whoever buys this kit will see the contents for the first time since it was packed at Ideal Aeroplane & Supply in New York well over 90 years ago. Ideal Aeroplane & Supply was one of the earliest aircraft model makers in the USA, marketing their first kit in 1911 and running a well-known storefront that sold materials as well as kits for early aeromodelers. What is less known is that they had a very large line of ship kits also. They ranged from one foot to several feet long and covered unique and popular civil subjects as well as warships and submarines of the period. The company was very innovative in introducing the Moulded Hull which cut assembly time by more than half by eliminating all hull carving, shaping and sanding. The builder could use it right out-of-the-box and immediately add the deck, superstructure, fittings and prime or paint. Ideal was also known for their excellent, full size multi-view plans that includes many assembly notes, rigging diagrams, tips, additional detail drawings and much more. Often there was even a detailed painting guide.

Wood Model Kit, Box Condition: VG+

Formerly released as the Midget Mustang. Scale flying rubber powered wooden model. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowlings, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present
