The type 688 Tudor began as a 1943 design, following a specification for a commercial version of the Lancaster IV bomber ( later known as the Lincoln). "The Airspeed Ambassador was designed to meet the specifications outlined by the 1943 Brabazon committee. The requirement was for a short to medium-haul, unpressurized twin-engined aircraft to replace the Douglas DC-3. In 1940 Airspeed was bought by De Havilland, but they continued to produce under the original Ambassador name..The first design used two Bristol Hercules radials, but before construction began the design had become a pressurized aircraft with the Bristol Centaurus 631 radial engines and seating for 47 passengers. Dated 1971 with dramatic softbox artwork. The Dam Busters squadron was famous for its daring raids on three German dams on May 16, 1943. Carrying the special Barnes Wallis-designed bombs, the Lancasters flew very low over the water in the face of heavy flak to drop the rotating bombs perfectly. Many did not return. The bombs did perform as promised, first skipping over the water, hitting the dam, then rolling down 30 feet before exploding with tremendous force. In an airburst, these bombs would not have damaged the dams, but since water is incompressible, the dams were breached. Never started.
