Guillows Spitfire - 16 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, 504

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

Sold

One of a very popular 16.5 inch wingspan series of World War 2 kits. This later issue is still factory sealed. The original issues were from the late 1960s/early 1970s. Scale stick and tissue rubber powered flying model. Includes die cut balsa parts, vacuform nose, wheels, plastic propeller, hardware, vacuform canopy, colored tissue, insignia and full size plans with detailed building instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

KMK AP-35 Mabuchi Geared Motor and Battery Case for Free-Flight TK-1 or other Airplanes, AP-35

Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

It is said that the Mattel Superstar (late 1971) was the first mass produced electric powered free-flight rechargeable airplane. This primitive geared electric drive certainly predates the Superstar but does not use rechargable batteries. The intended aircraft - TK-1 - is likely pictured on the cover. Has a clever method of controling how long the motor stays on - similary to the Ideal wooden flying kits 'gear extension' method of the 30's and 40s. Contains fuse material that is lit when the aircraft is lauched. The fuse burns and releases a rubber band that disconnects the battery power. I assume this kit is from the 1960s but it is not dated. Made from very light-weight plastic and metal. Never used and mint in the box. Two sheets of instructions - Japanese and English.
