Maircraft Piper Cub Trainer - 'Little Gems' Series Scale Solid Wooden Aircraft Kit, 1/72, G-1

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Mint

Sold

These kits are good candidates for the first line of 1/72 model aircraft produced in the USA. Although not as old as the Frog injection molded 1/72 scale kits, these solid wood and metal models were made in the late 1930s or 1940s to 1/6 inch scale - which is commonly known today as exactly 1/72 scale. Maircraft announced kits G-1 through G-6 with 'more to come', but it is likely that no others were produced as Maircraft was out of business by 1948. The highpoint of the Little Gems series was the plans and instructions. Wonderfully illustrated and written, they show step by step how to carve and contour the model and how to finish it. Includes excellent three view full size drawings and templates. The kit consists of balsa wood with printed outlines for all parts and a metal parts sheet with wheels and propeller. This kit has never been started and is complete with all parts and plans/instructions. Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model), and eventually even made these 1/72 scale series 'Little Gems'.

Life-Like 1908 Lanchester, 09463

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc++

Sold

Still factory sealed. 1970s Life-Like issue. From Pyro molds (see the end of this description for details). Nicely detailed kit for the time. Features detailed chassis and suspension with exhaust and steering linkage, full interior, complete motor and removable hood. Molded in colored plastic, clear and with rubber tires. On the side of the box it says 'Made Under License From Pyro Plastics Corp, Union, New Jersey', so clearly the molds came from Pyro. Part layout and design is identical to the other 'Brass Car' kit issues from Pyro. Also interesting is the Life-Like part number of 09463. The first issue from Life-Like was C463, certainly a Pyro style part number code. In October of 1969 Pyro issued C462 (one number less), the 1906 Renault. It is possible that Pyro never issued the Lanchester under the Pyro name. But clearly, when Life-Like obtained manufacturing license in the early 1970s, the molds for this kit were completed and owned by Pyro.

1954 issue molded very neatly in a beautiful gloss yellow plastic. The kit has not been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory bag. Includes instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

Pyro 1933 Bugatti Model 59 Grand Prix Racer Car, 1/32, C303-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

1960s Pyro issue from original molds. In the early to mid 1960s the Pyro company chose many of it's kit subjects based more on historical significance than popularity. In some cases, the specific car and owner is on the box. The model includes colored injection molded parts, clear parts, detailed chassis, detailed engine, removable hood and complete interior.
