The 'Independence' type Top Sail Schooners were built at the famous shipyards of Webb and Allen during the early 1800s. Ten clippers of this type were built for the US Government to enforce and collect revenue duties. The extreme rake of the masts with the added square sails on the top foremast made them fast and very maneuverable with a small crew. The War Schooners were very light vessels - only 73 feet long with a 20 foot beam and of 112 displacement. The bulwarks were cut out with more gun ports than guns to help lighten the ship. The armament consisted of two 9 pounders and four 6 pounders, which were shifted around the deck to fire from different gun ports and the need required.

Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). The complete line consisted of the Big 'T' Street/Rod, Big Drag Competition Roadster, Big Rod Show/Go Roadster, Big Tub Custom Phaeton and the Big Deuce '32 Ford Roadster. The Deuce Roadster molds cost over $150,000 to produce - an absolute fortune at the time. The design work alone for the molds was $50,000. The total cost of the project was over $1,000,000 - in 1963 money. The result was a nearly flawless large American Automotive model that has never been equaled to this day. The Big Deuce was one of the series by famous customize Darryl Starbird and the first issues were in red or yellow bodies - this is the later black issue.
