  Airfix Model Kits

Airfix RMS Mauretania Ocean Liner, 1/600, X481-800

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$95

Rare Airfix Japan issue. The Mauretania and her sister Lusitania were considered the finest and most beautiful ships of the day, both inside and out. Launched in 1907, she quickly won the Blue Riband from the 'Kaiser Wilhelm II' for the fastest Atlantic crossing. For more than 22 years she was the Queen of the Atlantic liners. She saw extensive service in WWI as an armed cruiser, transport and hospital ship. In 1922 she was converted from coal to oil and set another record in 1931 when she crossed the Atlantic 4 times in one month. Sadly, she was scrapped in 1935 as the Queen Mary neared completion. Never started. Factory sealed internal bag with decals and instructions.

Airfix HMS Nelson Battleship - T4 Issue, 1/600, 04203-9

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

$44

Still factory sealed. Nicely detailed full-hull kit. As her sister ship Rodney, she was designed with the main battery of 16" guns forward to make the armored box shorter to save weight. This did shorten the ship and reduce weight, but further space and weight sacrifices in propulsion made for a low top speed.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Still in the factory seal. Dramatic Craftmaster box artwork. Very finely molded and detailed like most early Airfix ship kits. Full hull.

Airfix Short Sunderland - Craftmaster Issue, 1/72, 1-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

$66

A remarkable example that is still factory sealed and in mint condition. The 'Hendricks Discount Toys' price tag is still on the right side panel. Incredible Craftmaster artwork. A merchant ship is sinking on the left and the crew is in lifeboats in the foreground on lower side panel. The Sunderland is preparing to rescue them, while the other Sunderland depth-charges the U-boat responsible for the sinking. The Sunderland's 21-year record with the RAF has made it a legend. Derived from the Empire Class Flying Boat Airliners, Sunderland IIIs had a top speed of 210 mph and an endurance of 12 hours. These qualities made the Sunderland a superb platform for North Sea and North Atlantic patrols, ASW and SAR. Crews usually loved the airplane; its large size afforded many airborne comforts that bomber or fighter crews could only dream of, such as bunk, a head and an area for food preparation. Kit features beaching gear, rotating turrets with elevating guns, movable control surfaces, external bomb load and rotating props.

The box cover aircraft is from 460/DET 1, a small but doubly-staffed unit that was directly subordinate in mission operations to 7th Air Force headquarters at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. Tan Son Nhut was part of the large combination air base and commercial international airport adjacent to the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon. RB-57E aircraft derived their nickname from their call-sign which was 'Patty Lynn.' There were only four aircraft assigned but each had two rotating air crews. Mission imagery (film) was processed by the 12th Reconnaissance Intelligence Technical Sq, which was also located at the 7th AF HQ complex. Nominally they were assigned to the Huge 460th Tactical Recon Wing, to which the 12th Tactical Recon Sq (RF-4Cs)was also assigned. (Thanks to John Barlow for the history!)
