Sterling P-51D Mustang Drops Bombs In Flight - 24 Inch Wingspan for R/C / Control Line / Free Flight, A13-398

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Purchased new in 1967 in Cleveland, OH. This kit is part of Sterling's expensive big-wingspan series that was designed for R/C and also includes numerous extra parts for control line operation. Can also be flown free-flight. Very nicely produced stick-and-tissue model that features high quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, stripwood and spars, fully formed wire landing gear struts, finished wheels, other wood and metal stock as required, light plastic engine cowl, spinner, air scoop, exhaust manifolds, bomb and many other details, perfect condition vacuformed plastic canopy that is not even yellowed, rubber motor, plastic prop, a big set of decals, coving tissue and excellent full size plans with detailed instructions. Never started and inventoried complete. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they had the action features and included everything needed to complete the model.

Never started and complete. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be 'deluxe' as they had the action features and were much nicer than most other kits of this type.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Early Highway Pioneers kit molded in black. This issue has the Gowland 'Balloon' logo on both long sides and D.K. Gowland credited with the design on the instructions. Molded in black. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. NOTE: the steering wheel is green plastic, not black like the rest of the car. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.
